Simply put...
I am a new diesel truck owner and have really tried to stay with, and understand, a lot of what is being said. I'm sure the answers to my questions can be found in the uber thread of "unplugging the EGR" but I just haven't been able to find a simple answer. So, simply put, if I unplug the EGR in my stock 08' 6.7 I should get better gas mileage, right? Would this just be for long trips or trips as well? And in doing so, can I just plug it back in when at the dealership, for whatever reason, with no ill effects on the truck or footprint to void any part of the warranty? Lastly, where the heck is the EGR to unplug? Any pictures? Pleeeease dumb it way down for me. Thanks.
99% of trucks see an immediate mileage increase across the board. Simply plugging the EGR back in a couple days before a dealer visit will make the CEL go away but I did read where a member did this and the dealer hooked the scan machine to his truck and told him they could tell that he had it unplugged. I don't recall if he actually cleared codes before taking it in. I have not read of anyone else having the same results with the dealer.
If you pop the hood and look at the engine, on the very top front you will see a big tube running from the left side to the right side as you are looking at it. That tube connects to the EGR valve on the right (Driver's) side. You will see a brown plug hooked up to the EGR. That's the one you unplug. Some trucks do not like this mod and you should know it within a couple days. If you start having any issues then just plug it back in......
