Help me decide: 6.7 or 5.9
I had my 07 5.9 in the shop today to replace a hose that was dripping water and I asked the diesel tech how the new engines were doing and he said they were coming in all the time for the soot problem. According to him the main reason is they are not driven hard enough. If you work them instead of just driving around town they do not have this problem. Just thought I would pass that along, I don't know either way.
I would go 5.9 all the way.I have a 07.5 6.7 loaded megacab 4x4 laramie,I just picked it up from the dealer tonight "the eighth time back for emisions issues" only to discover a transmision pan leak.I traded in a 04 6 spd that with no issues for this beautifull peace of junk.Buddy think about it,look at all the problems poeple are having on this forum alone.By th way my truck gets 13.8 mpg,my 04 got 16. Good luck I hope this helps.
Back in 2006 when I bought my truck, there was information already available regarding the new emissions stuff that would be on the 2007's. I read everything I could, trying to decide which I wanted. I was in no real hurry about getting a truck, so I could have waited for the 6.7. After I gave it a lot of thought, I reflected back to the late 60's and early 70's when they were just coming out with emissions on cars and all the headaches that went with those years. That's when I pulled the trigger on buying the 2006.
I believe somewhere on this site there is an article, or link to an article, that compares performance of the 5.9 and 6.7, you might want to take alook at that information. I could be wrong, but if I am remembering correctly, the 5.9 outperformed the 6.7??? Didn't they mod the 5.9 block to a 6.7 because they knew the emissions stuff would have eaten up the power gains?

DIESEL ENGINE
Drain and siphon the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
Remove the serpentine belt.
CAUTION: Do not remove the fitting on the pump that the high pressure hose screws into. The fitting may come loose unless it is backed up using another wrench. If the fitting does come loose, it must be retightened before continuing. (57 - 67Nm, 40 - 50 lbft) If this fitting comes out of the pump body, the internal spring and valve parts will fall out of the pump and they cannot be reinstalled properly. If this occurs the pump needs to be replaced with a new pump.
Disconnect the return hose.
Disconnect the pressure hose.
Access to remove the three bolts securing the pump to the cylinder head can be gained thru the pulley holes.
Loosen the pump bracket to the block.
Remove the 6 intake plenum bolts (POWER STEERING PUMP ACCESS).
loosen the inner cooler tube clamp at the intake plenum and remove the intake plenum.
Loosen the inner cooler tube clamp at the radiator support side and remove the tube from the vehicle.
Remove the power steering pump from the top of the engine compartment where the intake plenum was (POWER STEERING PUMP ACCESS).

Up until two months ago, I too was in your situation and was leaning strongly towards the 5.9, for the obvious reasons. However, I felt confident that the emission issues could reasonably be overcome and shouldn't be the deciding factor. Moreover, after spending more than six months searching the auctions, the Truck Trader, and other sources, it became apparent that the marginal savings, if any, could not offset the comparison of the attributes between a new and used truck. In essence, not knowing how the engine was broken-in and maintained, the reduced warranty, and the other unknown variables weren't worth the minor savings. The sales price for the 4wd Mega Cab, SLT, with various upgrades was 29k, and OTD was 33k.
Hope this helps.

An '07 5.9L with 20K on it? Sounds kind of fishy, but you asked so I will give you my opinion ... get the 5.9L.
I'm always a little nervous driving my '08 C&C just waiting for the lights to go off on the dash and I get stuck on the side of the road. I never worry about driving my old '97 (other than something falling off the truck due to all the rust).

I would never buy any vehicle that has an unproven power plant until it was out for a couple years. I've seen too many problems when Ford went from the 7.3 to the 6.0 which is why I got my 06 when I did. I wanted something that was proven, something I knew I could beat the snot out of without issue. However now knowing what I do about the 6.7 I'd buy a new one without much thought.
I'd get the 6.7
Other than the color and the engine,my dad and I have identical trucks. Mine is an '07 with the 5.9,he has an '07.5 with the 6.7
I bought mine not wanting to deal with a new to the market engine. Everyone says how reliable the 5.9 is.
My "super reliable" 5.9 has been to the shop more than his 6.7 has.
Mines been there 3 times and his once.
The 6.7 is just way more refined as well. If you weren't a gearhead, you'd never know my dads truck is a diesel from the inside. Its really smooth, quiet and powerful.
I'm not particularly fond of the noise and smell of a diesel truck. I know a lot of guys do though.
If you want the clatter and noise of a "real" diesel, you probably won't like the 6.7 as much.

Well, I've had my share of 5.9s and now this 08 6.7. The economy has hit the company I work for quite hard and I am now forced to try and sell it. Since I still need a truck I will be going back to an older 5.9 truck. I can tell you that now that I have done the deletes to this truck I have no concerns anymore. I absolutely love it! I will end up in a 5.9 auto truck where I will have concerns mostly due to transmission issues so many people have had. So, it doesn't matter which one you choose. There are concerns you should have with either one of them.....
