Help me decide: 6.7 or 5.9

I don't know much about the new 6.7. but looking to get a used 07... I've had plenty of 5.9's. I found a cherry 07, 6.7 with a auto, 20k miles. Help me decide.... Thanks!!

Thumbs up

I have owned a 04.5 5.9 with auto. Was a nice truck but could not get better than 14.5 mpg no matter what i did. Only had 28,000 miles on it. Found a 04 5.9 six speed with 16,000 miles for 24,000 .that would get 22-24 mpg on the highway. I loved the truck but hatted the color which was gold. A couple of year latter at the time found my dream truck.05 Flame red quad cab 4x4 with 5.9 and six speed. Had only 18,000 miles on it . With 315/70/17 tires+ winter fuel+ 70 MPH i got 19.75.A round 24,000 miles the truck started giving me nothing but problems. ASlo found out it was hit in the frontend. Traded it in on a 05 gmc 6.6 auto. Nice truck but could only get 15.6 with it no matter what i did to it. Had it over a year and then found the truck in my sig. only had 11,000 miles on it and got it for 26,000. So far i love this truck and have not had 1 problem with engine. I would not trade it for any other truck. My truck is bone stock except for unpluging the egr and the hummer h2 wheels and tires. I hope you can understand some of this rambling. I guess i am trying to say i love this truck . But i know there are other members on here that have had nothing but problems with there truck. I would get the vin and go to a dodge dealer. HAve them pull up the warrenty history on the truck. That way you can if the last owner was having a bunch of problems with it or not. But in the end it is a choice you will have to amke your self. Good luck and if you get it dont for get to post a pick of it.Thanks Mopar72

I just traded my 06 5.9 which I will say was a great truck no problems what so ever and it had 68000 miles. I got an 08 6.7 only because of the mark down that is going on.....I can only hope for the same kind of performance from this truck that I had with the 5.9.

What kinda mileage you gettin with the 6.7?

Id say go with the 6.7. I dont think theres anything to worry about. If I had the money Id have one sittin next to the 5.9. Both are good (I mean, come on, they ARE Cummins!!) and that new 6 speed auto is sweeeet!! Saaw a vid of a straight piped 6.7 yesterday, dang thing sounded like a jet taxiing down the runway. Sounded cool as all get out!

Are you looking new or used for the 6.7? New, it sounds like with immediate mods you should end up with a great truck. Used, if you buy a truck that is bone stock, it could have turbo soot problems (from what I have been reading, anyway). The 5.9 will limit you to nothing newer than a mid-year '06 (3 model years old already).

Mods go with 5.9, no mods or mild mods 6.7. To much emissions crap for me with the 6.7, so it is 5.9 for me or nothing!

Oops, that's right. It was some sort of computer change that happened in '06.

If I were going to get an auto trans I'd get the 6.7. If I were going to get a hand shaker I'd get the best deal on either one.

I would get the 5.9 diesel over the 6.7. The emissions on 6.7 are causing some problems. Mainly the P2262 code which means turbo mechanical failure from soot buildup. The dealerships will clean turbo and egr system but code may return. That is when the turbo gets replaced. They are still great trucks but if you want less trips to dealership get the 5.9 engine. If you're doing more open road towing then city driving then the 6.7 is better since it comes with exhaust brake. You could get the exhaust brake installed on the 5.9 also. The 6.7 engine does burn more fuel because of the emissions system.

My lease was up for my 06 5.9 in August, It was actually cheaper to return my truck (in my sig) and get the 08 6.7L then buy out my lease.

I kept my 06, It hasn't given me a lick of trouble(dealership once) cheap to mod, I can work on it myself, I know all about the issues and what to watch for(tranny). I also get fantastic mileage.

I have never driven a 6.7L and I am sure if I did I would love it. I just feel better with driving and owning whats proven and I will probably go 6.7L after the bugs have been worked out and my truck is ready for the pasture.

Buy what feels right for you and don't look back. Good luck

I have never owned a 5.9 but have driven a few. I do own a 6.7 and love it with the 6-speed auto trans. I have had the P-2262 soot code just last week and it real wasn't that bad. They did drill and installed a cleaning port on the turbo but we learned about soot in the boost sensor and tubing to the sensor ( I really think that was most of the problem). So all being said if you found a truck you like with a 6.7 I say go for it.
