Help with CTD purchase
I am sorry for asking the same question that has been asked before but I value your input. I have the option of buying a new 5.9l 3500 or a new 6.7l 3500.
I will use the truck as my daily comuter to work and then on some weekends pulling a 5th wheel trailer. Using the truck for a short comute 5 miles and shhoping etc I am concerned with the DPF, poor milage tec. on the 6.7l 2007.7 I have driven both and the 6 speed auto and turbo exhaust brake is awsome. I can also wait and keeep what I have for a year or so. Guess the real question is should I get the proven 5.9l add dodge exhaust and be happy I found a new one. Both trucks will be kept stock. I can get a 5.9l for 10k off sticker
Your advice is appreciated as well as your recomendations

I would go with the 5.9l. I have put 21k miles on mine, no problems. I drive mine to work everyday, not a single problem. Haven't done any towing yet, but nice to know I have a truck that can deliver when needed. I am keeping mine stock as well, only minor mods planned to improve reliability, performance, and gas mileage. I have heard too many horror stories with the 6.7s and the regen issues. First year for the 6.7l, it will probably take Dodge about 3 yrs to get the bugs worked out. If you look at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gens, this pattern seems to hold true! Good luck!
6.7L all the way...
I'd go with the 6.7L. The new 68re tranny and E-brake are obvious benefits over the 5.9, especially where towing is concerned. The bugs with the DPF are being worked out now, with the regen sequences being fixed in the latest flashes to reflect the driving habits of commuters who make short stop and go trips. I drive my 6.7L to work roughly 5 miles each way in city traffic and haul a loaded bobcat trailer on the weekends and have been thoroughly impressed with this new unit. It is a tough decision... the proven reliability of the 5.9L (after the initial hiccups it suffered when it first came out) vs the 6.7L which has proven reliable to many (including myself) but which has a very short track record. That's my .02.
Rwpor, I'm in the same boat as you... I can not decide either. Mine will also be used as a daily commuting truck when not pulling, but I have a 42 mile trip, so any regen should have No problem.
Its just that proven 5.9l against a NEW engine and tranny that is SWEET....

If it were a new dodge motor I might worry, if it were a new Ford motor I would certainly worry but it's not, it's a new Cummins so I fear not. I could see people being worried over the tranny because it is dodge built and dodge has a history of crappy trannies...but then I have not heard any complaints about the 68re in here. The only engine complaints I have seen are DPF related, and sooner or later someone is going to tell us how to remove that crap. Being that the corked up 6.7 already stomps the 5.9, with the 68re light years and 2 gears ahead of the 48re...I think the 6.7 is the logical choice. They will sort out the dpf programming for those that want to remain stock...the new reflash seems to have fixxed most problems right?

I would choose the 5.9L. It won't have any chance of giving you "regen" problems. As a daily driver with that short a trip, you would be asking for "regen" problems. Your engine will not even get up to operating temps in 5 mile trips.
Mine has been trouble free with exception of a recurring code that triggers the check engine lite. It's in the Dealer's today for a Dodge Tech recommended fix. I wanted the new tranny badly and the standard exhaust brake was an incentive too.
If they offered the trans and brake with the 5.9 I would have bought it , but with no choice I got the 6.7. As I said I've had no major problems over 6000 miles and it runs great and tows my load very well. Mileage so far not as good as the 5.9. About 1.5 mpg worst than my old truck.

Well, I've been on this site since I got my 2003 SO (one of the 1st ones in Vegas). I've since bought a new 2004 for the long bed and 6spd. Anyway, the majority of the posts when they came out weren't all these problems that you're reading about on the 6.7. Unless you can get a screaming deal on a 6.7 and you're willing to get all these 'reflashes' and be a guinea pig for this new Al Gore technology, I'd get the 5.9.
