fuel filter

I have the 2008 2500 6.7 !!!! where is the fuel filter? and just how difficult is it to change fuel filter ?? I have a buddy with a 2007 5.9 that just had his replaced at a garage and they said it was difficult to change and it took them one hour , as they were also servicing oil change.

The 6.7L fuel filter is a cartridge type filter. This is mounted on the LH side of the engine above the front diff. The instructions tell you to remove the left front tire then the fender liner to access the filter. Most of us do not do this. We tend to turn the tire to the outside as if you are turning left. Then fight the inner fender liner to access the fuel filter. You also need to open the star wheel to drain some fuel from the filter before removing the entire filter.

If you have never changed this I would take the truck to the dealer for the first filter change then do them myself after the first one. Cummins use a clear coat spray to protect the engine against rust when shipping and storing the engine before installation into a vehicle. This makes the filter extremely difficult to change some have even destroyed the filter the first time taking it off.

Do a search on this site for more information on changing the filter. There maybe pictures to show you.

By the way this should be change every 15,000 miles. I change both of my filter a 5 micron filter and a 2 micron filter at 10,000 miles.

jim w you are changing your filters to often. do not change them until pressure drops at the cp3. dicklohill if you add a good pre filter and 2 micron filter before the stock filter. you will never have to replace the stock one. pm me if you need part numbers to make one. jim call wix and they will verify what i am telling you. the dirtier the filter gets the better it filters. you are discarding a better filter than you are putting on.

Carl,
I understand filtration, since I am a retired hydraulic engineer from Cat. I know about filter and how they trap particles that are suspend in the fluid. The reason I choose to change every 10 K is that I am changing them right after the winter season, most of the time. In this way I am sure that there will be no water in the fuel from the seasonal changes from winter to spring.
I also do not have a fuel pressure gage on my truck. So if i wait for filter plugging, I could cause more damage then just changing out the filters sooner.

Filters are cheap compare to the price of a damage fuel system.

That is a very interesting concept. I trashed two lift pumps on my '98, 12v, 5.9L, by changing the fuel filter at every second oil change. My local Cummins shop told me to change the fuel filter on that truck at every oil change. Have they progressed that far? I just bought a 2010 6.7L.

Buy the way, I found that engine parts are drasticly less expensive when purchased from Cummins than from Dodge. The lift pump was in the $280 range from Dodge. About a year later it was in the $95 range from Cummins.
