First fuel filter change

So my 08 has 17000 miles on it and I'm going to change the fuel filter. Been reading about the updated filter and housing. So bottom line I MUST update to the new housing right?? These trucks have 1 filter that is a 5 micron correct? Surprised this update didn't constitute a recall.

why would it be a recall? there is no danger in the set up you have. they only created the update to make it easier for the consumer to change filters. recalls are only issued if there is danger of fire or a wreck to cause bodily injury or death.

I was thinking going from the 7 micron to 5 meant that cummins wasn't satisfied and could lead to fuel issues with the engine. Ease of changing is defiantly a plus.

The new filter is a much better filter, so you want to run it.

I would also change your fuel filter more often. The nastiest fuel fitler I have changed on my truck was the one with the least amount of miles, 10K, but the most time at 3 years. The PO only put 10K miles on in the 3 years he owned it, I changed it right after I bought it and it was NASTY. My fuel filter with 30K miles looked new compared to that one.

You can get the updated filter housing from Geno's garage or your local cummins dealer.

if you go to your local cummins dealer, make sure you take your engine number with you. they can't look up the part by the truck. only by engine serial number

I do not think this is a stock fuel filter arrangement. The Fleetguard design is all one piece. There is a gap between the filter element and housing. This is where the water when separated will sit until emptied by you.
So I would check the make of your fuel filter and see if it has a 5 Micron rated fuel filter in it. If it does then I would service just the element if possible. Other wise you will need to purchase the entire housing and element the first time, part number FS43257. There after just the element part number FS432578. You can buy them from a Cummins dealer or from Geno's Garage. They are less expensive then buying from a Chrysler dealer.

The "updated" fuel filters for the 07.5, 08, and 09 6.7L's are not the same as the 10+ fuel filters.

I think the original poster was referring to the entire filter assembly being updated to the filter and shell assembly with the subsequent ability to replace just the filter with the reuseable shell.

As an 07.5 owner that has changed a few of the old filters and a few of the "updated" filter & shell units, they are as much a PITA to change as the original design.

Just ain't enough room in there. Not hard to do. I took the driver tire off but I don't know if that helped or not.
