Diesel Mechanic Says No Need For EGT
I think i might get one
how does he like it?
does it work good
sounds like it does to me

But I told him that he sould still have EGT gauge on his truck and that it does more for you then just watching your EGT's. OK, the truck has a water temp gauge(engine temp) what would happen if for some reson you lost your coolent? The water temp sensor needs to be in fuild to read temps. So if you have lost your coolent and didnt know that you did. The gauge inside the truck well be of no use to you, in telling you that you are over heating you truck. But the EGT well tell you that some thing is wrong when the temps start to go up.

Bob
you found me out.lol i want gauges for shut down temps. but more or less i dont need them since i am stock and will not be playing with my warranty. now i just hope the dealer ship does not play warranty games with me. but they can tell if you been chipped or not. but they do look cool!
Well since a few mentioned about the temp gauge by no means did I says it was a SAFE or ACCURATE way of actually doing it HOWEVER I sit and drive my truck anywhere from 5-15 hours a day and I KNOW what the gauges are at at all times plus the fact that I fuel up 1-3 times a day so EVERYTHING under the hood gets checked including coolant. Now if I did lose my coolant then it would get hot and fast if pulling hard but depending how you lose your coolant you're going to know you're losing coolant whether the smell, temp, seeing, or hearing it.
Now again I said I dont condone using the temp gauge for an accurate reading by any means BUT since I am a bit lazy and not having the most time (money plays a little factor as well) is the reason I do not have gauges yet. But onsidering 294k miles and still no gauges I have been slacking quite awhile
well plus have been doing something right also!
But a few people did make a few good comments also techs dont like to see gauges they will think the worse and on the other hand yes they ARE definately cool looking
Again im mostly stock dont run any gauges havent had a problem in 294k miles I may be lucky or some may be unlucky yes I want gauges but have yet to do it.

You can loose coolent without knowing. It happen to me in a car of mine a while back. Lost the block heater not in the driveway or I would of seen the mess it made. It must of came out just when the system started to build pressure and no I never saw a rise in temp past normal on the stock gauge. If the car had EGT gauge I would have seen a rise in temps do to the loss of coolent. And do to me not Knowing that there was no coolent I had over heated the engine and seized it, so I well not make the same mistake on a engine that cost alot more to fix. And that is allso the resson I have EGT gauge in my hot rod, there more then just turbo temp for a diesel. What happened is the bolt that holds in the block heater in rusted apart. But the block heater had a good enough of a seal to stay in there till the pressure rose. After that had happened I checked my truck same steel bolt that holds the block heater in it. But it wasnt rusted that bad. I replaced it with a stainless steel bolt just becouse it happened once and thats enough for me. Gauges or more then just toys the right ones will tell alot more info on what is happening in your engine or trany, you just got to learn what they are telling you and when. I did not know about a fuel pressure gauge till I came to this site and learned what could happen and the damage it would couse if a lift pump died. So now I have one a $40 gauge installed that could and will save me around $1000 or so for a injector pump. Oh and tell me when to change the fuel filter, it tells alot just have to learn what its saying.

This is a debate then can go on and on for as long as ANYONE would like I will simply state this once AGAIN. I pull heavy, I have more miles on my truck then a lot of the members on this site and I have had NO issues NOT having any gauges. AGAIN im NOT stating that you do NOT need them HOWEVER I will state that it isnt a have gauges or you will melt your motor type of thing...
Also for the whole fuel pressure thing to know when your fuel filter needs to be changed if you would change it normally like your suppose to then you wouldnt EVER have a drop in pressure, to wait till you start losing pressure to change it seems kind of like not changing your oil till AFTER you start to burn it up. Do it all right and on schedule your not going to have issues.
People can disagree all they want everyone does things their own ways whether its from personal experience or from word of mouth your going to end up doing it the way YOU want to do it. Unless I get some absolute proof on something MY way is the right way to me.
This truck has never had any gauges on it...........................

Neither has this one..................................

No problems with either one, but our trucks are totally stock and serviced by the book with mopar fluids and filters.

One time I had to replace the exhaust manifold @ Cummins and the guy put less antifreeze back in than he took out. He was in a hurry to go home. I left the shop and and could'nt even make it to the entrance ramp back on the highway which was less than 1 mile before I noticed the water temp shooting up to the upper ranges of the guage. Just made it back to the shop to remedy the situation before it really overheated. Again, just being observant and knowing my truck.
