Blowing black smoke, loss of power, no codes, dealer doesn’t know why
We are having problems with our 2008 Dodge dually 3500 ram truck 4 x 4 diesel Turbo Cummins 6.7 engine. A few weeks ago we were hauling our 40 foot fifth wheel and we had a sudden loss of power and we got some bluish looking smoke so we pulled off & had the dealer in that area check it he said it was the DPF filter needed to be regenerated. So we had him do that work and they regenerated it and then we got it back and they also did our oil change and put in a new fuel filter. We drove it around a couple weeks without hauling the RV & it was blowing a little bit of black smoke. Today we are hauling the RV again and it’s blowing tons of black smoke loss of power again and it also wouldn’t kick into overdrive, it stayed in fourth gear or wouldn’t come out of fourth gear. Brought it to the first dealer we found and they’re saying there’s no codes, they checked the injectors, they’ve checked everything they know what to check, but no codes. Please help us because they don’t know what to look for & we are hauling a 40 foot fifth wheel and we are stuck in their parking lot. We are up in Maine and we have two dogs with us. They are leaving for the weekend & letting us stay here. What can we tell them to try on Monday? Also sorry if this is running together. I dictated it into my phone.
Black smoke (soot) means the dpf substrate is fractured or melted.
You had no codes, cel or overhead messages?
It's not that uncommon. I didnt have any either until I was pulled over and idling.
I also cracked/melted the dpf. Good thing is it won't clog again because the soot is blowing thru it instead of being captured.
I had my first event where I lost power and blew a bunch of soot. They felt the egr valve (no egr codes) was sticking open so they cleaned it.
fast forward a month and I had another event. This time they replaced the egr valve.
No more events afterwards but I got tired of blowing soot out the tailpipe and forced them to replace the dpf. (all under warranty)
It appears a sticking or stuck open egr valve is pretty common especially if the 67,500 mile cleaning isn't performed on schedule.
Do you have your truck or is it in the shop still?
If you have it, is it still blowing soot?
If you do and it isn't then try unplugging the egr valve actuator and drive it over the weekend.
You'll have a cel for the egr valve but it won't hurt anything.
See if it happens again. If not then you may have found the cause.
