Axle shaft seal

I thought I would let you know I had my axle shaft seal go at about 6500 km's. Might have been earlier, I only noticed it then.

Anyone else have this experience? The dealer said he's never heard of them failing that quick.

Took two days to fix, they had to order the seal.

Thanks for looking.

Has to be a fluke. Was it a rear seal or a front seal? If a front seal, was it driver's side or passenger's side?

THey just said it was the axle shaft seal. I would have to assume it was the inner one on the hub behind the wheel bearings. It was the passenger side.

Mine went out at 74k. It was the driver side rotor hub seal on the rear axle, the only other seal is the driveshaft seal. No big deal. A friend has his in the shop for the fifth time. cp3 bad, intercooler blown, nv5600 shaft bearing shot, and now the crankcase has 1 gal diesel in it for the second time. By the way his is an early 05 and bone stock.

Just an update on this.

I have noticed a noise for the last while and took the truck into the dealer.

They said I was down about 2 liters of fluid in the rear end and it was covered in metal shavings. They are not going to do anything since I declined the differential service. I had the seal above repaired at 9500 kms. There is no leak anywhere on the rear end. Where did the oil go?

I serviced my front end at about 25000 kms but left the rear since new oil should have been added when they inspected the rear end when the seal went. I specificaly asked if they would check the dif out. The lady today said they didn't do that as it there have been a dif sevice charge. I don't know what she meant except I think they replace the seal and that was that.

I have had the truck in at 25000 for oil and the tech didn't report the fluid low.

Yea, they don't check the diffs during an oil change. Extra charge for that!! Hard enough to get them to lube the thing correctly, especially to grease the driveshaft joint, even with a sticker on the radiator that says to lube it with every oil change!!
I used to have a service station back in the early 70's and when we lubed a vehicle it included checking ALL fluids including the tranny, diff, power steering pump, master cylinder AND the batteries. Course back then we were a SERVICE station.

So, just another update on this.

I took my truck to another dealer and they pulled the dif cover and put it back on and ordered me all new parts, gear set, all new bearings including wheel bearings. Must have been a pile of shavings in there. Also the growl is real loud now.

So I guess the moral of this story is don't trust the monkeys at the dealership to do their job.
