Adding 2-cycle oil when filling up with fuel?
I just started adding some 2 stroke oil at fillup. I don't measure it, I just dump in what would maybe amount to a cup or so. I can't say that I notice any real significant differences, I think it might run slightly smoother. My mileage seems to be a tad better as well. I got numbers towing this past weekend that I have not seen before. Could be various other factors though..
Monty, You may want to check your facts on the CJ-4 oil. It is compatible with higher sulfur content, but it does effect the oil change intervals.
From the API web site on CJ-4 oil: "Optimum protection is provided for control of catalyst poisoning, particulate filter blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, low- and high-temperature stability, soot handling properties, oxidative thickening, foaming, and viscosity loss due to shear. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories. When using CJ-4 oil with higher than 15 ppm sulfur fuel, consult the engine manufacturer for service interval."

Here is a break down of each oils content:
CES20078 (CI-4)
15% NOACK
.14% Phos
1.5% SASH
.8% Sulfur
CES 20081
13% NOACK
.12% Phos
1.0% SASH
.4% Sulfur
Here, you can clearly see that the CES20081 spec has a lower TBN
The reason for this, is that CJ-4's additive package cannot fully control the level of sulfur used in 350ppm. They simply did not add the same amount of additive to combat sulfur in the CJ-4 as they did with the CI-4. This is why you do not want to run old fuel with new oil or vice versa.
This is why the API website states that a shorter drain interval is required, it cannot provide protection from the higher sulfur content, so shorter intervals are introduced.
From Cummins standpoint, the last thing that they want to do is tell there off road customers that "hey its okay to run CJ-4 with the 350ppm diesel just run shorter drain intervals" This may seem okay to us, but from a business standpoint buying the engine that tries to get every available life from an interval drain, may be the deciding factor to go with another engine.
Monty,
Thanks, now I have to spend half the night checking my facts to make sure the 7 gallons of oil I just put in my boat (3 per engine, 1 generator) won't void the warranty. The fuel sold on the water is "Off-road diesel" in most cases and is not ULSD. When I talked to the Cummins rep at the Boat show this year, I speciically asked him about the new oils and he told me and I quote "The new CJ-4 rating is backwards compatible with all older engines". Guess I should have been more specific and mentioned the use of "off road Diesel". (He was a Cummins Rep at a boat show
, he should have known most diesel boats run on "Off road diesel").
Thanks for the info....

I wouldn't mess with the 08 ulsd units with 2 stroke oil. I was having some springtime injector noise issues of my own. (winter fuel up here isn't very thick or greesy) I threw in about 130ml of 2 stroke oil and 130ml of howes (howes goes in every tank for the last 2 years and it sure never made the injector noise drop) and around 60 miles the injector noise was gone. Gonna go with out it now until it comes back, just to make sure it isn't just a nice fresh batch of thick oily summer fuel. At a 1000 to 1 it's hard to see it hurting anything. A whole quart (liter), well that's up to you.
