My 01 and 03 dodge cummins still had honey colored oil at 3000 miles, and they were barely dark when changed at 5000 miles. They both had bigger injectors in them from Diesel Dynamics. No "city life" here, our small town has 3 traffic lights.

I have a 5.9 2007 and my oil is black as it looked when I changed it about 2 minutes later.... Run it for a minute or two to pressure test it and check it and its black as night.

But that is normal, I've never seen a diesel with clean oil and I worked at a lube shop in high school.

the secret if you want clean looking oil is either don't drive it, or use non detergent oil ............it works ...
i personally have never seen a diesel engine with clean looking oil. as a retired mechanic i have seen many!

I had a 7.3 powerstroke before this "used oil burner" and I could get 10k miles or so on the oil before seeing it get dark. I would typically run 15-20k miles on that with Amsoil oil and filter. Sold it at 180k and it ran flawless.

My 6.7 is black after initial startup to check the filter and get oil circulated to double check the level (1 minute). I've got the EGR unplugged but that doesn't help at all. Do you have to completely eliminate the EGR to get the full effect??

And my oil purchases have double with this Dodge, no extended drains allowed on these POS's. How's that for helping the environment? 20K mile oil change compared to 7500. That equates to a whole lot more used oil to dispose of and waste.

I have a question for those unfortunate few who had parts fall off their trucks.
What does your oil look like now, without those parts.
What oil and filter do you use.
How long can you run it.

my oil definitely looks better, but it is still very dark. i use Rotella oil and mopar filter. i change mine every 5k. the non synthetic is cheap enough to change more frequently, and i think the protection is fine. i have used it in my last three diesels with no problems.

The common rail 5.9's never had those parts you speak of and the oil from those engines are BLACK as soon as it goes in the engine. The soot issue has more to do with the way the fuel is injected.

When I had 11417 miles on the clock I deleted my DPF, EGR, and installed a PMT. After the install I decided to do an oil change. I figured now that my engine can breathe; I may as well give her a transfusion. Two weeks after doing the deletes I took a load of horses from Dallas, TX to Lexington, KY and back. I was impressed with the power and fuel mileage. (12.7mpg average @ 70-75MPH towing 14K). Last week with 15334 miles on the clock I installed an Amsoil BMK-21 by-pass filter. I also changed my oil at the same time. Today I checked my oil as I was getting fuel. When I pulled the dip stick out I was absolutely amassed how clean the oil was after 500 miles. It looked like the oil in my wife’s Toyota Camery after 1500 miles. I'm SO GLAD I deleted that soot pump’n, turbo kill'n EGR valve. I only wish I would have done it the day I bought it! In the past when I changed my oil; it was black as night instantly. Now it's nice and clean without the EGR sooting up the crankcase, not to mention the by-pass filter helping clean things up. I can't stress enough to those of you who are on the fence about doing the deletes; DO IT!!! Below is a photograph of my dip stick after 500 miles. I hope this helps proves it to ya...

Again, hiway miles does not pollute the oil like commute miles - the more often and longer the engine is idling, the greater the pollution - I noticed the same difference in a 10 year 10mile commute with few stops vs a 5 year 1mile commute, stop signs on each block - the oil stayed clearer on the 10mile excursions, blackened quicker on the 1block stoppages - Shell Rotella, oem stock filtration, 3kmi oil\filter changes
