You can use either with the 5.9...you do not need the ULSD

I don't understand that because all on-highway diesel sold retail was required to be <15 ppm ULS as of 10/15/06 (9/1/06 in CA).

FYI, per the EPA, LSD can be sold for on road use until 10/2010 outside of CA. Only 80% of all diesel fuel made has to be ULSD.

Thats what I thought too, but I read the EPA website the other day regarding highway diesel fuel. These rules apply everywhere in the US except in California (unless other States like CA have enacted laws tougher than the Federal requirements) and basically here is what it says:

1-Fuel service stations do not have to sell diesel fuel, they can choose to sell gasoline only.

2-However, if they do sell diesel fuel:
-If the service station only has 1 diesel fuel storage tank & pump, and therefore can only offer 1 type of diesel, it MUST be ULSD
-If they have separate diesel storage tanks & pumps, they can sell ULSD and LSD, but each pump must be labeled LSD or ULSD. The decals are supposed to be placed near where the gallons read out.

By 2010, all diesel used in the US, including off road, marine, locomotive, etc is supposed to be ULSD.

So, assuming the majority of fuel stations are complying with the law, you should only be getting ULSD if the station only offers 1 type of diesel. If its a big truck stop, the fill stations for the big rigs may be LSD and you may have to go to the car diesel pumps to get ULSD.

If you pull into a bigger fuel stop and the diesel pump you're at is labeled for LSD, you should check the rest of their pumps since by law they must offer ULSD too.

I know that some pumps down here in South Texas say that they are LSD, but in reality they are ULSD. They just haven't gotten around to changing the labels on all of the pumps. My dad works for Valero at a refinery and some of their pumps still say LSD but he said that they haven't made LSD for quite some time now. It's just marketing dragging their feet on changing all the stickers.

Maybe it's just Georgia, but there's quite a few stations here that only have LSD. And I seek them out because my 2nd gen runs much better with LSD when I can find it.

I waas under the impression that #2 and diesel were just about the same . Just diesel having a cetane number limit .Where I live all home heating oil is dyed diesel.

The last place I even saw lsd was in Hummlestown PA . I got about 1.5 MPG better From Hummlestown to my house than I did going to Hummlestown and the load was the same.

The 80/90 through Indiana stations only have LSD no ULSD. The pumps even say not to use if you have a 2007 or newer

I really don't believe that is correct. There are to many stations that don't have the ULSD stickers on them. If it was just a few stations maybe I would go along with what you say, but not the way it is now. Besides, in Victoria, there are stations that are owned and serviced by the same fuel distributor, some (2) have ULSD and the rest, including a truck stop don't. When asked about it, the ones that have ULSD say it is shipped in from a different refinery. To my knowledge, the Valero refinery in Three Rivers is producing ULSD and none of the refinery's in Corpus are. This is what I have been told by the manager of a fuel distributor in Victoria.

It really doesn't matter to me, I'd rather run ULSD but I'll burn whatever I have to. If I need fuel and there isn't ULSD available, LSD seems to work fine in my truck and hasn't caused me any problems.

I agree with you on the "I'll burn whatever they are selling"! I don't care but then again I have a 5.9 so it doesn't matter. I'll find out today what Corpus is producing. Three Rivers is only making ULSD, but I thought it was all Valero refineries in this area that are making it. Either way I'll get some verification on that.

I still think that some of the stickers aren't changed because the stations in Beeville that get their fuel from this area didn't change their stickers for a while, but if you went and asked the store manager they would tell you that it was ULSD. They are changed now but weren't for a while. Either way it doesn't matter because I'll run PS in any tank of fuel that I buy!

I have heard that ALL Valero are ULSD but most of their pumps still say LSD. If your dad says they are all ULSD that will make my life a little easier. I am going to be running all over East Texas tomorrow and I am hoping they have the Ultra low.

Thanks for the help.

When all this emission stuff started it was supposed to be that every station East of 281 was supposed to carry it. (That was what I was told.) So I don't think you'll have much problem in east Texas. Either way I wouldn't worry about it, you're going to have to give your left arm for a tank of fuel no matter what Sulfur content it has!

It jumped in Corpus today to $3.299/gal. It made me want to park my truck.....not!! I do want to get better mileage though because it is getting pricey.

Thanks for the help.. If I couldn't pay for the fuel I defiantly couldn't afford the truck...

Thanks,

Don't feel too bad guys. I just came back from London last week. When you make the adjustment for liters to US gallon and convert the British Pound to US dollar, it works out to a US gallon of diesel was $5.90.
