4X2 or 4X4 - What to do?

I am planning on buying an '07 Ram 3500 Quad DRW with the 6.7L diesel and 6speed auto. But I can't make up my mine whether to get it in 4X2 or 4X4.

I have an occasional need for a 4X4 but it would be very occasional. I also plan on towing a 5th wheeler that goes about 14K GVWC.

Can anyone tell me the difference I would expect in MPG when not towing?

Any other pros or cons?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I think most guys on here would agree go ahead and get the 4x4 even if you would only use it occasionally. You've got some extra maintinence on the front with the extra u-joints and the diff. It'll burn more fuel but you'll surely try to kick yourself if you don't have 4x4 on those rare occassions you need it.

I agree with DiEseLjunKY. You will regret not going ahead with the 4X4. I drive one and love. I dont use 4X4 often but it has gotten me out of some trouble over the past months.

couldn't operate without a 4x4. don't use it very often, but when you do... makes all the difference.

last winter when the ice storm hit, was VERY happy my CTD has 4x4!

The way I see it is kinda like a gun or an airbag. Hopefully you won't ever need it but if you do, you are really glad you have it!

4x4 has better resale value. IMO looks better. I cant hardly go a week without using it either. The extra maintence isnt bad either

I agree with JR.

If you live in a region that gets snow, go with the 4X4.

Big difference in handling in the white stuff.

To me, that means you need a 4x4... Even if you only need 4x4 very occasionally, what would you do on those occasions if you had a 2wd?

Get the 4x4 - I wish I would have. I've been stuck in a wet lawn with my 2wd truck. you won't notice the fuel mileage difference. If you are pulling a gooseneck or 5th wheel make sure the truck isn't to high for it. the Dodge
4x4's are higher than the rest (a good thing).

If you think you might need the 4x4, regardless of frequency, I say get it.

If you have good self-control, get a 4x4. I couldn't have a 4x4 because I have no self-control and would blow all of my money fixing all my boo-boos lol. But I'll admit, with all the rain, I sure couldve used one.

Smile Thanks for all the feedback

Heeded everyone's advice and bought the 4x4. Took possession of my 3500 Laramie DRW 4x4 on Saturday. It has the 6.7L and 6-Auto. I have been enjoying it.

Excellent. I'm jealous. That new 6 speed auto is sure nice, and I wish I had a dually.

I think you made the right choice with 4x4. Even if you only need 4x4 very occasionally, then you should have it. Having to have the truck pulled out isn't something I'd care to put up with, even if it was only very occasionally...

Anyhow, enjoy the new truck. Also, I just noticed you just joined. Welcome to the forum.

Almost 10 years ago, I asked myself the same question, and decided that I didnt need 4X4, and only need a 1500, you know, because I only need to tow once in a while, and 4X4s are for rednecks...

For the last 10 years, I've been hurting my foot kicking myself in the *** for not getting the right truck.

I just saved you 10 years of *** kicking. Your welcome.

(Just picked up a 6.7L 2500 4X4 mega cab last week, so my foot can rest now).
