08 reliability of 6.7L

hi everyone,

this is my first post. i am a long time GMC owner. i have my heart set on a Lariat 2500 Cummins Mega cab. after reading some of the issues with the new engine i am hoping to hear some of your opinions on the 08 6.7L. i have become a little nervous about the regeneration glitches. i'm in the quarry/construction business. in the colder months it is not uncommon to idle your vehicle on jobsites to keep warm. plus i don't have any experience dealing with Dodge dealerships when it comes to service.

will idling for short periods give the 6.7L fits and me frequent visits to the dealership?
will the 08's have some of the computer updates already applied?
overall how much updating do you expect Dodge to do for 08?
how about the rest of the truck......reliable?

thanks!

I luv it, but im always on the highway and you siad it yourself, most problems consist of idleing and city driving. i would probably go with a 5.9

My Bro had his truck flashed in june the same as me for excessive soot accumulation and he idles his truck 8 to 10 hours with no problems any more might say cataylist 90% but goes away fast after he drives it on the highway, Me on the other hand i'll idle my truck for about 25 min and go down town for something and do this all week NEVER had the cataylist message come on, i've had minor issues that were inconvient but nothing major. I was in a 08 and the only 2 obvious changes are a tire pressure management system and a bluetec badge. And I now know how to tell if the truck is in regen or not now, the engine temp gauge will increase slightly than normal, like i'm talking about a needle with I used to drive truck so i'm a gauge watcher and i noticed this 3 days ago. hope this helps some.

If your going to idle the unit for any length of time.. yeah its get -40 here, I know were your coming from, all you need to do is have the high idle feature enabled by the dealer. Do a search on this site for the details, I think I read were the 4500-5500's are going to have this feature stock.

i believe the motor and dpf is very reliable when it is running the latest version of the software available. alot of guys with problems probally have not had the reflash.

To answer your specific questions: 1-You'll have to buy a Ford if you want a Lariat, the top line Dodge's are Laramies (Sorry-I just couldn't resist that). 2-If you buy an 08 it will come with all of the latest SW flashes that exist at the time the truck is built. There may even be some HW or SW improvements that none of us are aware of yet. 3-If you use the right fuel, no additives, the right motor oil and use the high idle feature, you should have no problems with idling the engine.

I love mine. Remember, the issues you see on this site only represent a very small number of these trucks sold and on the road. Run the correct fuel and if you want to idle the motor, have the manual high idle activated.

I absolutly love my 6.7. I am in the Excavation business in lake tahoe and it gets cold here. I have let mine idle in the the morning to warm up for almost an hour (forgot i even started it) and the truck ran fine. I've never had the DPF clog, no engine codes nothing. And i dont have the High idle done yet either, althogh i think i may do it this winter just cause. I also just recently installed the S&B cold air intake and i had calculated my mileage at 16.7 MPG. Which is leaps and bounds better then my Chevy Duratrash. I bought the Laramie 2500 Megacab with every option available and im telling you there is not a single better truck on the road, i have 3 friends who all bought 08 F-350's and all they can do is complement mine. One guy is even talking about taking his back for a Laramie 3500 Megacab Longbed. Yes longbed. So i think you should give the dodge a serious chance, drive the new Superduty and new Duramax like i did, and belive me the dodge is the way to go.
