I heard of one person being denied warraty on the engnie, 'til the truck owner proved to the moronic tech that the Fleetguard was using was an approved filter. The Mopar filters ARE "rebadged" Fleetguards.

One thing with dealers, if they want to be buttheads, they will try anything to get out of doing warranty work. They don't make as much money on them, versus, you having to flip the bill.

Wix fuel filters have the "Stratapore" name and swirl on the bottom. Not sure what this means or if it's the same with the oil filters.

the swap is done (used wix), so thanks for all the advice. i talked to some mechanic friends who all advised me that wix had some problems in the past w/ some major engine failures...BUT...since then have become a very reliable heavy duty filter. next time i'm ready to do an oil change i'll call up geno's in advance and order the kit!! and btw...i called the dealer, and they wanted 38 bucks for the fuel filter and 20 for the oil filter. i'm not a broke bumb by any means, but even if i was a multi-millionaire, i wouldn't give them the pleasure of ripping me off!!
later, dustin

Can some one please point me in the direction of this list of approved filters? I thought that we were protected by the magnuson/moss(sp) act concerning replacement parts such as filters and the like?

The dealer can not and does not void warranty because of your brand of fliter. There is an act that states if the dealer claims you have to use THEIR brand of ANYTHING or it will void warranty, they have to provide the part or fluid free of charge. I will get the act name out of my filter book at work. And by the way, WIX is top of the line in filters.

CMNS_gal_4x4,
That is not correct. Only true if the dealer is the only source for the filter. The filters can be had at any Cummins store, mailorder, Ebay, Dodge dealer and heavy equipment shops that handle diesel repairs.
BTW, I believe AC Delco has a filter that's approved since it's built by Fleetguard.

Quick note, Henson Dodge is selling oil filters on Ebay for $75 a case (12).

The name your looking for is the Magnuson/Moss act. As far as replacement parts go, if it is unique to the application, I think you would have to use their part. As an oil filter is not unique and there are so many aftermarket companies that make/sell oil filters, you can replace your filter with any one of them and not be denied warranty coverage. To be denied coverage, the manufacturer would have to prove that the filter you have used caused the damage. And as Cummins owns Fleetguard, they can not require you to use only their products.

And can some one please tell me where I can find this approved list of filters?

They ran out and checked my filter after I told them I did the first oil change the tech even bent my radiator fins to get a better look. All I wanted was for them to take a look at some bad wiring that turned out to be A butcher job by Canopy World in Bremerton.

I've used WIX in everything from my trucks, to my wife's car to the boat with no problems. I was told Wix was the manufacturer of the Napa filters.

Dodge has a service bulletin regarding approved filters. It states that engine damage caused by non approved filters will not be covered by warranty.

OK that was over 3 years ago and for a different engine. Is there one for the new engine? If not then I do not see where they can say that anybody has used a 'non approved' filter.

It's the only one I've seen - that's why I posted the link. If I had seen a re-issue of the TSB to cover the 3G engine, I would have posted it!
