Whine at rear of truck
Whine at rear of truck
I have 04 3500 Dually with 75000 miles. There is a whining noise similar to turbo whine coming from under the rear of the cab whenever the truck is slowing down. Seems to be worse in cold weather. Anyone experienced similar noise?

First.... Welcome to DTR!!
Are you the original owner?
Sounds like it could be a pinon bearing issue. But many noises can be transmitted through the drive line and can be hard to diagnose.
The reason I ask about being the original owner is because with only 75,000 miles it is hard to think there could be any damage unless there was some abuse to it.

It does sound like a pinion-bearing may be worn or damaged. If the gears howl during deceleration only, it's very possible that the pinion-bearings are damaged or the preload has loosened. Has the fluid in the rear differential ever leaked, allowing the fluid to get below the recommended fill level?

I am the original owner. Truck has never been abused or wrecked and has had perfect maintenance. Heaviest load has been pulling a 34` travel trailer. One person suggested there could be a leak in the turbo system.
Have you ever launched any boats with the truck??? If so that could be part of the prob as maybe the gear lube has been contaminated with water. I've known that to have happened to a couple guys. Just a thought...HTH

I would suggest first checking the gear lube level. If it is good I would try to find a reputable gear shop (not the dealer or a shop that does it all) and take them for a quick drive so they can hear it too. Really the only thing that will cause a whine is gears and/or bearings.
You also say it happens when slowing down. Does it happen when slowing from higher speeds, lower speeds, or both? If both, at what point or speed does the noise stop? Does it go away as soon as you speed back up?
And you being the original owner should make this an easier thing to diagnose!!
