what's this mean

what's this mean

saw this on a window sticker and wondering what it means:

4-speed automatic transmission
11.50 rear axle

i know what the 4 speed is but what is the "11.50" ?

AAM (American Axle Manufacturers?) labels their axles differently than the Dana way we are accustomed to.

I think they go like this:

11.5 is the big one, comparable with a D80, (rear)
10.5 is the slightly smaller one, like a D60, (front)
these both come on the "Heavy Duties".

9.5 is the wimpy one that you'd find on a 1500?

The 11.5 is the diameter for the ring gear in the axle - the bigger, the stronger (all else being equal)
