What size tires to get?

I just bought an 05' and traded my 01' for it. The 01' would cruise the interstate at about 2000 rpm @ 70 mph. Of course my 05 with 3.73's and the G-56 tranny is geared way lower.
This is quite irritating to the warden, errr,, wife when she drives the truck.
What size tires would work for my truck ( no lift or leveling kit ) to get the RPM's down a tad when driving on the interstate????

I have really liked my Nitto Terra Grappler A/T in 295/70/R17. I have 22K on them now and probably have close to 20K left in them, and probably 75% of my miles are towing. I believe they are listed on DiscountTireDirect.com for 175 each.

I like the looks of the Cooper ST and STT tires, but have not priced them yet.

With the 295s, 3.73s and an auto, I run 2000 RPMs at 72mph. So with your 6 spd. you should be dead on 70 mph @ 2000 rpms.

With no lift or leveling kit, 285's are the largest/tallest tire (according to Discount tire) that you can run on our trucks without some risk of rubbing.

Some guys run up to 315's with only minor rubbing though.

IMO, the 285's are a great compromise between the, to small, stockers and 315's.

I am running BF Goodrich 285/70/17s on mine and I am really happy with them. Look good. Ride great. Good traction. Wear great too. Pics in my gallery.

I usually don't run that fast, I have a Class A CDL and that would be murder if I was caught going that fast, but I did take it out tonight for a run on a rural road and it's about 2150-2200 near as I can tell. My speedo is off about 2.5% slow even though I had it recalibrated at the dealership. So at 78.5 mph ought to be pretty close to 80 actual mph, and I was running just under 2200.

Also, my 295s DO NOT rub and aren't really that close to rubbing even. Some people even run 315s with no rubbing.

I've been happy with the LT285/70R17 Cooper Discoverer STT's on my '03....I have around 4k miles on'em and they're great !

i am running the Nitto 295s on my truck stock setup...no rub or anything. I think I could go to 35's without any real issues as well.

ANother thing I wanted to mention about the Nittos is that they dont have sidewall flex when pulling heavy--I run some pretty heavy GN trailers and it feels like I may as well be driving a dually. They are solid as a rock and rated at over 3400# each at 65psi cold. I definitely will be going back to this tire or the STT, I am going to wait and see how these ST and STTs hold up mileage wise first though, since it looks like I will get 40K out of my Nittos, which is pretty decent considering they are all towing miles almost.

Brock,
Is your truck a 6-speed? If so what RPM are you at at 70 mph? That is really what my origninal question was. I want to find a tire size that will bring the RPM's down to say 2000 -2100 at around 70 mph. Thanks....

The Nitto Terra Grappler 295 will put you right at 2000-2050@70 with the lower geared 6 spd tranny. It will run 2200 RPM at 80 w/ 6 spd. Does that answer your question?

you can go 305 and maintain zero rub... but the tire selection is limited... Im going to the 295 terra when my tires bite the dust

Brock,
Great looking truck! I'm with ya, I keep reading the 315's will only rub on the control arms, and that can be eliminated by adjusting the turning radius stop screws. Now of course I would never endorse 315's (until I actually pull it off) and I bet any type of off-road use would destroy something. Myself, I'm average height, 5'9", but I have short legs. I just ordered a set of Putco 4" S.S. Boss Bars Wheel to Wheel, (Summit Racing, 735.00 incl. ship.) but I'm affraid if I raise it up 4-6 inches, then throw on 315's, I might eventually rip the grab handle off (it's an overweight thing). And my Funny Little Honey (who totally endorsed the nerf's) has a harder time than me. So, money aside, my intent is to go the minimum of I think 2" to accomodate the 315's. With the 4.10 rear I bet I don't have to modify any gears either. I might eventually do the speedo recaliber but that's it. I am interested in some Billstiens as replacement shocks and stabilizers just to handle the extra beef. I may never see any off road use at all, but if I need to I want to be ready.

Hey, what type of flares are you running? Love the look. I'm excited because I see mine heading down the same road your's has gone.
