Weird new noise

I have a weird noise that I have never heard on this truck before. I bought gas the other day and by the time I got home I had this ticking/knocking sound coming from my engine. I'm not sure what the cause is other than maybe some bad diesel. What can I do to fix it? Or is there something else going wrong. It sounds like a valve tap or exhaust leak. I hear it slightly at idle and then I can hear it all the way up to about 40 MPH after that it gets to noisy. Its not very loud, in fact I have to have the windows up and the radio on low to hear it. I just don't like it not being normal. Thanks for any help.

A ticking/knocking sound could be anything from a bad valve to a loose exhaust manifold. You'll have to dig around and locate the sound a little better.

A good trick is to get some rubber vacuum hose. Put one end into your ear, and move the other end around until you hear the sound better, Kind of like a stethescope. For deeper engine sounds, use a long screwdriver with a plastic handle. Press the plastic handle against your ear, and lightly touch the block and heads with the other end. Use the longest thinniest one you have.

I have narrowed it down a little. It is coming from the right side of the motor (facing truck) It sounds to be somewhere from the fuel filter up to about the just before the fan. Thats about all I can diagnose tonight. If anyone can give me anymore pointers I'd appreciate it. I'll keep posting whatever else I can find.
