Hey there! My truck just turned 99,000 today. 2007 5.9. Excellent trouble free miles! ANyway, I parked after a 5 hour drive and came back out half hour later to change my oil and I noticed a couple of smaller puddles ( 2") each I guess. ALmost looked like Fresh motor oil amber colored liquid with a little oily feel. Truck just had coolant flushed 2,000 miles ago and thermostat changed. Refilled with the required HOAT Zerez 50/50 mix. I noticed that this coolant is amber colored and not the red that comes from the factory. At first I thought it was oil but I was right at 5,000 miles on the oil and it is pretty darn BLACK so Only other thing I could be is coolant.

Pretty normal I guess for this mileage from what I have read. I don't have the time to do it myself so taking it to the shop for replacement. Closest dealer is now about 70 miles away so thinking my good Mechanic can have my business. SOund like a water pump?? I also recently changed out the radiator cap. THanks for any advice!

 

water pump is held on with 2 bolts...pretty simple to do except for the shroud being in the way.

 

Check to see where the drips are coming from. If it's dripping off of the a/c compressor on the front bottom left of the engine then it's most likely the water pump. If it's farther back then it's likely that red hose near the turbo. Either one is quicker and easier to fix then driving 140 miles round trip to have it done at a higher price.

 

Thanks to both of you. its def not the little hose further back. Its coming right from the water pump area.

 

If it's the WP, then it will be leaking out the weep hole (facing the WP), the lower left side (about "7pm"). Stick you finger there and if its wet, yes it's the WP leaking out the weep hole.

Also, from that weep hole, the coolant will "slide-down" to a small flat area. If its wet, yes it's the WP.

 

Covered under your Cummins 100K mile warranty. I would think driving 70 miles for a $500 repair might be worth the time and fuel cost. If it is the water pump leaking should only take about one hour to replace. Call ahead make sure they have water pump in stock.

 

Yea I am having my private mechsnic change it out for me. He is putting in a genuine cummins replacement and Labor is only $250. Not to bad a deal in my book. PLUS it has not dripped since it did it the first time. Dealer is not going to replace unless it drips in front of them. I am just having it done and will feel much better.

 

If that's a $500.00 repair I would be shocked. It took me all of an hour to change the water pump on my truck.

No shock. Genuine cummins replacement pump was$ 140 and 1 hour to install. Coolant had less than 1000 miles on it so it was evacuated into a clean container and re used. 250.00 total bucks out the door.

 

Water pump from Geno's is 35.00.

 

Is that Genos pump an origional cummins replacement?

 

It's a Gates water pump. I don't know anything about them, however, Genos only sells Dodge Cummins items so I wouldn't think they would offer a sub-par item for them.

 

Is your water pump made of gold? i paid $86 for a napa lifetime waterpump. it took me a total of 10 mins to change it out. drain your coolant into a clean bucket for re-use. remove 2 10mm bolts, remove water pump, put new pump in and replace 2 10mm bolts. siphen coolant through a cheesecloth and fill up. 15 mins tops

 

The above post pretty much sums it up!!!!! It's almost too easy of a job. I do still have my $35 Gates branded H2O pump under the back seat for an emergency situation......but for the time being, my Geno's purchased 185* thermostat solved my heating problem. I keep a ratchet and said sockets back there as well in case the time comes when the water pump takes a crap on me.....it does have almost 300k on it so it's better to be prepared I always say!!
