Probably OLD info for those on this board, but new to me. From one of my Jeep lists:

Jeff

Just passing along from a friend who's a sales manager at a local Dodge dealership here in Utah.
Scott

-----Original Message-----
From: The Big Sgt [mailto:thebigsgt@hotmail.com]
Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 8:07 AM
Subject: Cummins

Here's an interesting thing I got from the service department. For years my friends have been "Chipping" their diesel
powered trucks and pulling the chips when taking them in for service.

Well, guess what? For several years now Cummins has been making a scanner that would go into the truck's computer and read
the memory that the normal scan tools wouldn't read. Up until now Chysler wouldn't get it for the dealerships. Well that's
changing and soon it will be out there. So in the future there will be a few problems. Can you say VOIDED WARRENTY!

(Staying stock till it's out of Warrenty!)

Matthew J. Westrich
"The Big Sgt."
Fleet & Internet Sales Manager Layton Hill Dodge
650 N. Re:Warranty
You hit it on the head!

That issue has been surfacing around here for about 6 months. Recently Bosch has been bouncing back about 90% of pumps from the 24 valve and common rail trucks and refusing warranty, forcing the dealers to go back to the customer after the fact. This has created a huge customer service problem for Dodge. Hence the new tools to catch the problem before the guy walks out the door.

I only wish the new common rail fuel pumps were less expensive. I have bought one from screwing around with a computer kit, and do not want to do that again!

Re:Warranty
Many of us already figure that modifying our trucks carries with it the responsibility to also accept the liabilities that go with those mods - it's pretty 2 faced to knock dealerships who would cheat us out of warranty protection, and then do our best to defraud a dealer by removing known waranty-killing mods before going in for warranty work. :

Ya wanna play, better be prepared to pay!
;D

Beyond that, it's MY truck, *I* paid for it, and I sure don't intend to let DC hold me hostage over a warranty, or dictate what I can or cannot do to my own truck for the first 5 years and 100,000 miles! Why wait til I'm nearly ready to trade the dern thing off before I finally get up the nerve to make the truck behave the way *I* want it to? Who's REALLY in charge here, anyway? :
:

While those other guys are dancing to DC's tune, I will be enjoying my truck my way - as they sit watching a calendar and their odometer - and yeah, if mine breaks, I'll be the one who fixes it, my way and at the place of my own choice. ;D ;D

Re:Warranty
Let me start out by saying that I DO NOT have any performance mods on my truck but the plug in computers sure are tempting.

Is it really true that DC could or will be able to tell if you use something like Edge? How do they go about doing something like this. What do they look for to be able to tell if you did this?

My friend just put an Edge computer on his truck and I was going to go over to his place and put it on mine to see what it's like but I'm not going to do this even once if there is any warrenty problems looming down the road.
