Warning for ALL 3rd gen owners
 

I received word from a Bosch Representative through one of our members that he recommends ALL 3rd gen owners run a minimun 2 micron fuel filter because of Injector issues.

There are currently NO Stock replacement injectors available from Bosch and many people are in a real bind over this with no fix at the moment.

OK, 2 dumb questions:

What are the Fleetguard ones that Cummins and Gino's sells?

If they aren't 2 micron, what is Bosch suggesting we run?

Jeff that is all the info I received left for me on my cell phone. I wanted to research that info for you but decided to get the word out first that people are having problems because of this.

I will post more when I get more info on this issue.

On Edit Fleetguard Premium (FS19800E) is 7 micron

Regular Fleetguard (FS19579E) is 10 micron

If this is the best DC can do thats almost as bad as GM. A local dealer said he had 41 blend doors on back order. [duhhh]

the bigger problem is how clean you are when your replacing the filter itself, Cummins is really pushing Clean Care right now and finding most problems come from techs that are sloppy and not properly cleaning the area around the fuel system and sevicing it, even to the point of your hands better be clean and not using any pumice type or waterless hand cleaners at all when working around injectors and fuel system. Most people dont realize that a micron is about the size of a bacteria. very small and doesnt take much to stick a injector.

I'm gonna show some ignorance here....is there any company producing a 2u fuel filter for diesel?

As far as I know the only company doing that is Baldwin and they make those filters for the FASS systems.

Well, I guess after I get Dodge to pay for my new sticks (I'm apparently going to have to wait till this fall when it cools off some, up 1 minute of smoke on start being "normal" :rolleyes: ) I'll be buying a FASS too.

Each year, at May Madness, the Bosch Rep. from the Las Vegas store gives us a seminar.
Last year, Bosch was seeing a lot of damage due to lack of lubricity in the fuel. At that time, he said that those of us on the West Coast that were receiving fuel manufactured in CA. were, in fact, getting ULSD with too little lubricity. They were seeing a lot of problems related to this.

Another problem area was communities in the vicinity of military installations which had jet engines. It's not uncommon for the military to not accept jet fuel that has any contamination, at all. They test all the fuel. If contaminated, they will not accept the fuel & it goes to the local diesel storage facilities, has additives put into it so that it can be used by the local diesel buying public. The problem is that the additives don't get distributed evenly or in enough quantity. And, we end up buying very dry diesel for our trucks.

Not too much was mentioned about filtration, as I recall.

This year, the Rep did not mention the lack of lubricity. After his seminar, I asked him ,specifically, about whether we still needed to add lubricity to our fuels and he said that it appears that the manufacturers are, now, adding enough. Bosch isn't seeing the same problems that they did, last year.

Regarding the filtration issue, the story I heard was that Bosch wanted Dodge/Cummins to start using 5 micron filtration. Cummins thought 10 micron was fine & they settled (compromised) at 7 micron.

Caterpillar is concerned enough to run 2 micron filtration on their engines, now.

I have a 115 gal. aux. fuel tank in the bed of my truck. The dealer (Dually Depot in Elkhart, IN.) wouldn't guarantee the tank unless I had their filter (Fleetguard 10 micron) installed, also.

Later, I discovered that a Cat. Advanced Efficiency Filter #1R-0749 (2 micron) would fit the Cummins filter mount provided by Dually Depot. I now run that filter on the Aux., tank, only, & have had no problems. I like the idea of the added filtration. This is a big filter. About 10-1/2" long.

I got the idea of the Cat. filter from a Duramax website. Some of those guys are "really big" on added filtration, thinking that is the cause of many of their injector problems. One of the guys there is building a system, for sale, using the Cat. filter.

Without going to a FASS system is there a Baldwin that meets the 2u spec?? I have been using Fleetguard's Premium (7u) from Geno's since I got my truck. I see Baldwin has a drop in (PF7977) but I can't find the specs on that filter yet.

Raycor has the 2 micron filters and I have one on the RDS aux. tank but not on the main tank. Have been using Mexican fuel for the past year without any problems. Cost $1.71 per Gallon and I do use additives

Isn't this common rail technology been used in Europe for years now with no abnormal problems? Is the problem lack of clean storage tanks,etc. here in the U.S? I've got to admit,even with the known nagging problems with my 24 valve its beginning to look better compared to the injector hassles with 3rd. gens. which is not the fault of the owner. Knowing we've got sub-standard fuel in this country,it seems logical that D/C(are you listening Dr.Z?) would have engineered the fuel injection and filtration to reflect that fact thus eliminating warranty claims or in many the refusal to honor claims due to"fuel contamination".

I'm glad I did not listen to the nay sayers! I change my fuel filter every 5k miles with the oil! [roll]

Now I'm off to find a 2u filter for a stock housing.

I'll let you guys know.

(So far proving to be easier said than done)

Thanks for the report Lary. I hope we can have more info as soon as it becomes available, as this info is sketchy at best.

Does anyone have any idea what DC says about this - no injectors, and 2 micron filtration? DC warranties the engine, writes the owners manual and specs out the engine and what fits inside the filter cannister.

I never really thought about it, but is Bosch the ONLY supplier of our injectors in the entire world? Lary said Stock injectors (as opposed to after-market?). No fix on the horizon?

As far as repairing an OEM injector, if they do indeed go bad, can someone repair and/or hone them out and make them work again? If so, that should help prevent someone from being dead-in-the-water at the dealer.
