I'll bet that these engines will run just as long and just as strong on any good quality oil, be it Synthetic or dino!
I used to work for NY state transportation dept. and ran many miles on trucks running plain old 15W-40W dino oil. In my 30 year career I never saw an engine fail, and these engines got a hard workout, but were always serviced properly. I think that is the clincher.......change your oil and filter when they need it, and you'll go far

Are you guys that are running Delvac going with the 5w40 or the 15w40? I like the idea of 5w40 but I'm in a mild climate and not sure if I should change from the recommended viscosity.

Delvac 1300 is a dino oil and 15w40. Delvac 1 is a premium synthetic and a 5w40. The d1 is good for any temp, year round. The 1300 could be arguable at lower temps...

 

I know Delvac 1 5-40 is a premium synthetic and also that it should be superior to any dino 15-40 but it's not listed by Dodge as an OK alternative. I'd hate to get into an argument with Dodge about a warrantee issue. On the other hand I want the best oil in the Cummins.

wetspirit, do you really foresee any oil related problems using delvac 1 or other good synthetics? I wouldn't be worried about warranty and oil. If they decided they didn't like the oil you used, they legally can't void your whole warranty, just can deny you in the case of an oil related failure....

 

I wonder how all the Cummins motors ever lasted all those millions of miles before the invention of Synthetic oils?

Valvoline Premium Blue will take it to the limits with no problem, is my guess.

Would those be the pre-1976 cummins engines? I wonder how they did it myself.

 

I used 15W-40 Rotella for its first 18k miles, and that includes all winter last year without any issue. Not that I could have seen any tangible difference anyways. It never used a drop of oil, and still stunk for a while.

I do subscribe to the benefits that syns give us, and for me that means low temp flow #'s and increased drain intervals; but also think that we've created a paranoia in some ways concerning the use of good old fashioned dino oil.

 

Which are 100% ester based. I use this on my KTM motorcycle for the ultimate in protection. Wonder if there is such a thing for my 03 HO

There would be no warranty dispute as long as you change the oil at the recommended DC and Cummins intervals while under warranty. Should your engine suffer an oil related failure just don't try telling them the synthetic oil manufacturer said it is ok to extend the mileage in between changes. Once the warranty expires change it at the mileage you feel comfortable with while staying within the oil manufacturers recommendations.

Yes, Mobile Delvac 1 and Amsoil........

100% synthetic polyalphaolefin and ester basestocks.

 

It is my understanding that PAO and ester are different. Are either of these class 4's 100% ester or are they 50% ester and 50% PAO?
