Valve train noise or injector rattle? See video...

Trying to figure out if the noise is from the valve train or injector rattle in my HPCR Excursion. New engine, valves have been adjusted, stock injectors, only a smarty on it. Noise seems to get louder when the engine comes up to temp.

It's most noticeable at 0:38 seconds and anytime after that when I'm in the throttle.

man that thing will sound badass when you get the rattle fixed. nice work.

what is your rail pressure when it starts to rattle? maybe a rail sensor or fca sticking and raising the rail pressure cause in rattle. i think if it was valve train rattle is would be louder at idle then under a load

Might check the blue fuel line clamps. Mine will rattle like crazy when they get loose which is every month. But I mostly hear it at idle and it might not be what you are hearing.

Yeah, other than the rattle it sounds awesome. Runs excellent now with the Smarty on #9. With only 1/3 throttle it will bark the turbo pretty good during the 3 - 4 shift though. I'm still trying to get the TC to unlock during this shift (for the life of me I can't get it to do it).

Not sure on the rail pressure, don't have a gauge for that yet. Maybe I can get my dealer to take a ride with me with his DRB scanner.

At idle or no load, no rattle. I can rev it in the driveway and not hear it. I was thinking the same thing about valve train. I would think it would be there all the time, but I'm not positive either...

Just a thought, do you think it could be coming from the flex plate/converter under certain load conditions. I have heard of converter bolts hitting and making a ticking noise. We run all 6 speeds at work and a bad throw out bearing sometimes sound like a valve train rattle(if it is not completly trashed).

5.9Excursion Jan 7, 2008 11:00 PM

Nope, not convertor bolts. I used red loctite and torqued all of them properly, even double checked each one to be sure I wouldn't have to revisit them later.

I'm wondering if maybe it isn't just the normal noise associated with the injectors and due to the ford body or possibly less insulation on the firewall, that maybe the noise just sounds louder than I would expect????

Does it happen if you take the smarty back to stock? I have heard of injector rattle with smarty.

5.9Excursion Jan 8, 2008 06:58 AM

It was there before I loaded the smarty, just not as noticeable though. I didn't drive it much like that. I will have to go back to stock before my drive home from work today and see.

I rember a thread a while back that was talking about a rattle and I believe that they did something to the injection pump and it cleared it up. Sorry I don't remember exactly what it was but it may be worth looking into.

Sweet ride! (for you know... a f-o-r-d)

Doesn't sound RPM related to me. Or??

5.9Excursion Jan 8, 2008 03:56 PM

It's not rpm related, it has the noise at any rpm when I'm in the throttle or under a load. When I get out of the throttle (at any rpm) it is very very quiet. That's when my wife says, see that's what I want it to sound like all the time...

mikmaze Jan 8, 2008 04:12 PM

It does NOT sound anything like the noise I was telling you about when my injector blew, not at all related to what my truck sounded like. Sounds to me like somewhat normal rail noise from all that pressure, and the injectors opening, closing, causing a vibration almost in the lines. You could add a quart of two stroke, see if it quiets down, but from what I hear, you sound ok to me. As for it sounding like that all the time, good luck, only thing that will tame it is sound deadening material, firewall and hood.

I'm not an expert, but that would rule out injector and valve-train noise to me. I'd be looking at the fuel pump or something else that runs consistently regardless of RPM.

(I guess it's not the speedo cable either)

OK, on the way home from work I loaded the stock SW back on the truck. Noise is much quieter but still there (noticeable). Maybe its just the normal injector noise and my originally gas powered excursion doesn't have the needed sound deadener on the firewall? (yet...[laugh])

One question though, with the stock SW on it, I can only get about 16-18 psi of boost and it is extremely slow. Is this normal?
