Valve seats

How do you tell if you have a bad valve seat or if it has failed? I have anothr tread going about my rocker arm but i just want to make sure before i adjust valves and do some more damage. Im thinking its the rocker but i want to make sure. Can a person tell before they remove the head?

Well i think i droped a seat. The exhaust valve on number 1 cylinder, 2nd one, is about 3/16" lower than the front valve. I went to adjust valves and there has to be close to 0.040 or more. Well looks like the head has to come off or something. Not really sure what to do with the truck.

Sounds like a seat problem to me, I cant imagine a piece of carbon 3/16 stuck under the valve, i wonder if it would be worth doing a compresion test ?
