I've followed this since I just got an 05 and I pull heavy loads some times, and not load a
lot! Today I talked to the guy that bought my 99- 3500 from me. His son has an 05 like mine and it is in the shop now over injector trouble.
His son hauls cattle with the truck for a living from stockyards to feed lots. Obviously it
pulls loads often, and he is still getting the canned response of "excess idle time" being the
cause. (he has 2 bad injectors)
He does idle some loading and unloading, but not very long, and with his loads you would think the injectors would blow themselves out.
Any input?
Thinking I should have kept my 99

Yeah mine is still smoking. I took to the dealer. Got the "idles too long" story. Have run one tank of fuel through it will power service cleaner. Still smokes. I am going to run it for another 1500 miles and take it the dealer it came from. I think they will take care of me. If not I will take care of them.

I thought the cummins was the best part of the truck! I'm still waiting for the Toyota/Cat combo to come out.

Dodge is now telling me I need bring the truck in and let the dealer try to clean them first and IF I lower the idle time and IF I still continue to have problems they will consider replacing injectors.

Hey its a start....

Interesting. Ask them to see the service procedure for "cleaning injectors" because I don't think it exists.

Wouldn't that be the shi*, they tell you that you are not driving the truck right. They don't have the technical capability to actually test the injectors. But they'll think about it if you let them "clean" them? I think your still getting crap, but I agree....

Hang in there. Persistence is key here.

Just a thought guys, but injectors are considered part of the emission system of an engine and engine manufacturers must warranty emission system components free of charge for the useful life of the engine. Ditto for things like cats and evaporator containers.

This is especially true where it might be <easily> proved that said faulty emission component makes the engine fail its initial emission certification. Like an injector that smokes black, blue or white for example.

EPA enforces all this stuff. You might consider writting them. Just don't tell them about your mods...

Has anyone sent their injectors to be flow tested? They may just be badly unbalanced. (I build turbo road course cars btw) I use RC engineering to clean/balance and flow test car injectors, and they do deisel injectors to.
Are there aftermarket replacements without this problem?

Well went to dealer for oil change. I also have a misfire at start up for about a minute then goes away. I also smoke as well for a couple seconds, but I dont find the smoking to be a problem since I do believe it is a by product of being babied which mine is. This past weekend I drove about 400 miles towing a compact John Deere tractor and since then the smoking is not as bad in the morning, but anyways back to the misfire. So they stated they would take a look at it.

So when I picked it up they explained to me that these are designed to misfire below 65 degrees so they will build up heat in it faster.

Also stated my air filter was in need of being changed. Hmmmmm only 16,000 miles on truck and filter minder was only half way out, and after looking at filter I am surprised this thing even ran at all. So I have changed the filter and I will see what this new software upgrade does when I go out to start it in the morning. Maybe post photo of filter later.

The Filter minder definitely doesn not work. If it looks dirty upon visual inspection, regardless of what the minder says, it is dirty and should be changed.

3 cylinder deactivation was tested and shot down. It does warm up the truck faster, but it is not in your software. You would have alot more going on than a little white smoke if you were actually running on 3 cylinders. Their explanation is just plain wrong. 3 cylinder running is very loud with lots of vibration. You need one or more injectors replaced.

Yes- what about aftermarket? If it fixes the problem I'd probably just do that.
I also noticed, that after driving easily a few days, I punched it and got a ton of black smoke. My 99 didn't do this. Sound right to you guys?

Actually when I was towing I had to get going pretty fast to make entrance ramp in construction zone and blew alot of black smoke, this happened several times under moderate throttle, but after my 400 mile trip and after smoking under hard acceleration and I mean hard no more smoke has been present. So I imagine alot of it is the black soot that builds up in the exhaust, I could be wrong but since mine isnt smoking anymore on hard acceleration its the only logical explanation. Will have to see if it does it again after being drove awhile.

I might be mistaken, but there aren't really any aftermarket injectors.

You can get tips, but not the whole injector.

Some Thoughts

I managed to make my white smoke issue go away and here is what I did. This is just my thoughts but see what you think. Fist I stoped hitting the break or cancle button on the Cruse Controll with out having my foot on the throttle. You should not just cut off the fuel when crusing at 70. Second either use the cruse to increase your speed to pass or turn your cc off and utilize the throttle. I found that I get minimal throttle response when the cruse was on and I pushed the throttle. I increased my drive to work from 12 miles to 18 giving me more full temp run time each day. If any of you do the things that I listed above try not doing them for about 2-3 weeks and see if you notice any reduction in smoke and a smoother idle. I hope that my sugestions work for you.

Note that I do not tow or haul much. I do run WOT every time I get on the freeway and I have also been running either Lucas or Power Service for the last 2000 miles or so.
