Just my experience...

When my driver's side started squeaking I had to put another 300 highway miles on it before I had a chance to change it. It was even loose in one axis, as the needle bearings were pulverized.

My thought was that it wasn't transmitting any power, just coasting, so what's the worst that could happen? I can't easily imagine it coming apart and seizing the axle.....but on the other hand I guess anything is possible. Maybe someone on here has heard of that happening, idunno.

Mine went out in the middle of a hunting trip. I put another 1000 hard miles on it and it was fine. By the end of the trip I certainly wasn't going to sneak up on anybody though!
