WELCOME TO DTR!!!!!!!!!

the fuel companies say nothing is needed with ulsd, most of us run something anyway. take you pic, powerservice, stanadyne, seafoam, etc.

alot of the additives have a summer and winter blend, just read the label, they will state if contains antijell formula for cold use.

silencer ring. remove the intake hose from the aircleaner to the turbo inlet. (dont forget to unplug the air temp sensor plug) inside the turbo inlet, you'll see a snap ring and a sheetmetal disc. just use a flattip screwingdriver to remove the snapring and pull the silencer disc out with your fingers. be careful not to chew up the compressor housing with the screwdriver blade. reinstall the hose, and connect the sensor plug.

Pulled mine silencer ring out yesterday. Didn't make a bit of difference to the turbo sound. I wouldn't waste my time. If you want the loud turbo, I think you need to do the complete intake modification, and remove the silencer vanes in the intake system, or build a whole new intake pipe. There are a few threads on both subjects.

I thought the "silencer" ring was actually designed to direct airflow and remove the turbulance. I remember reading a magazine article where they tested the stock Dodge airbox and it flowed just as good or better than the aftermarket ones. I'll see if I can find the article.

Smile I left my silencer ring...

I read the same thing. I believe that the silencer ring does help flow the air to the turbo. I was resistant to remove mine. I read a thread that kinda said that the vanes and louvers in the intake are what quiet the turbo whine more than the silencer ring. I also read that removing the silencer ring actually might create more turbulence right at the point of entry into the turbo making airflow at that point less efficient.

So I went ahead and pulled out the whole intake "S" tube and replaced the whole tube as explained in this thread:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=143769

$60 in parts. Less than 1 hour on the install. Very pleased with the turbo whine. Truck seems way more responsive (but could be the boost fooler I installed the same time) and she sings all the way down the road...

Plus, you can reverse the mod quickly and easily if you bother with new clamps as you can swap them out in about 3 minutes if you need to take her in for service.

I was kind of wondering the same thing when I removed it yesterday. It looks like it does serve a purpose in directing air flow into the turbo.

I am going to put mine back in...

I removed mine and put it back in for the same reasons you guys are. Could be my imagination but I think it pulls a little harder with it in and wasn't impressed with the sound difference.

There is no silencer ring in the non-pickup applications. It's a noise only solution for Ma & Pa Kettle complaining to their Dodge dealer.

Cummins gave it the perfect name.

I believe Dodge specs the Silencer Ring to quiet the turbo, it's not part of the Cummins motor. So I don't think it makes a difference either way.

dodgezilla04,

I can agree with what you told him except for the use of Sea Foam as an additive for use with ULSD as it contains a lot of Alcohol. It has always been my understanding and is also listed in the newer trucks owners manual that you should not use Alcohol in you fuel.

The only time someone should even want to use Alcohol in their fuel is if a person has to de-gel the fuel in their fuel tank. Even then I would only use a product that is made to de-gel fuel like Power Service 911 as IIRC they also put some lube in it to help protect the fule system. I know Sea Foam said on there can its Ok to use all of the time but I sure would not want it nor use it in my engine all of the time like they say when Dodge tells us not to use it.
