Like I said, I used RP for 3 changes. What really irks me about them is they raised their prices significantly when oil hit $147, yet they have still not lowered their prices now that oil is half of what it was. That's pure greed. Meanwhile, Mobil1, Rotella, Delo and others have lowered their prices by about 15-20% or so, since the barrel costs dropped.
I don't use oil just on opinion alone. I have a uao to find what works best as far as engine wear.. as far as prices dropping.. I don't know if the base that some of the higher end oil companies uses acutally dropped in price or not .. I have use Amsoil in all my gas burners, & 2 cycle engines.. I have a case on order for the diesel

If you have the 5.9 engine, install a bypass filter, and do oil analysis then it pays to use a high quality synthetic oil. As long as your analysis comes back clear you can run the oil long enough that it will more then pay for itself, and you get the other synthetic oil benefits mentioned above. I question whether it is worthwhile with the 6.7 engine because of the potential for fuel dilution of the oil over long run times due to raw diesel being injected on the exhaust stroke to heat the DPF when it cleans itself.

In my opinion, if you run a lightly modified truck, you can see a great deal of cost benefit by running a good synthetic combined with bypass filter. I was between 15-20k miles between changes and had very good UOA's. This was using Schaeffer's 9000 or Amsoil.

With a heavily modified truck, a great deal more soot ends up in the oil causing more frequent changes in spite of the bypass filter. Then it is more cost effective to use dino and more frequent (5-7k miles). Delo has a flashpoint competitive with synthetics although none of the CJ oils has enough of the protective properties that the syns have. That should allay some of the high temp fears. I still run syns and just eat the cost on more frequent changes.
