Truck Shakes at Idle!
Hey guys ive got an 2005 cummins with about 173k miles.
Not too long ago it started making a metallic ticking sound from the top of the engine when fully warmed up, and just the other day a new sound came up.
When I would give it some gas to leave from a stoplight, and then let off, it would make this faint popping, thumping sound for a few seconds until the rpms fall. Also when I try to start the truck after sitting for a few hours, the "wait to start" light stays on for much longer than normal, maybe 15-20 seconds. Now this morning i start it up and its a lot rougher than usual, and if look at my mirrors the reflection is fuzzy because they are shaking; the exhaust makes a faint popping sound and the exhaust smells funny.
I have a laser thermometer and tried to figure out which cylinder is different than the others, but I havent had much luck.
I have don't have gauges so I can't figure out the fuel pressure.
What do you guys think I can do?
Also, are there any diesel mechanics you can recommend in around Orange County, CA?

Not exactly, I took the truck in and had the mechanic hook up his scanner tool. He turned off one injector at a time, and they are all working. It's possible one is weaker than the others, but they are all working. He told me my grid heater may be failing or my lift pump may be failing. I'm not going to throw money at it though because of the different possibilities.
