Transmission Cooling 48RE

Hi,

I've been watching the transmission temps using my Commander for a few months and am a little confused by what I am seeing from the sensor installed in the suggested (pass side tapped hole) location.

I would expect to see temps approximating engine coolant temps, given the liquid/liquid primary heat exchanger on the driver's side of the engine. It is my impression that the secondary liquid/air cooler located in front of the radiator is only used if the transmission oil temps exceeded a preset value.

So my question is, what temprarture does fluid begin flowing through the secondary cooler and why does the trans temp not come up to something like 180F and stay there. It seems like the liquid/liquid cooler can disipate quite a lot of trans heat to the overspeced engine cooling system without needing the secondary cooler. The opposite should be true when the engine warms up and the trans is still cool. I rarely see temps exceeding 150F on the trans gauge, except when pulling hard.

I know someone out there has measured this and knows how it all works. Please share the knowledge!

Thanks,
Dale

I find trans temp depends on the environment and type of driving.

The biggest issue is slipping the converter.

Sitting in traffic, winter or summer, the trans will run up to ~200-210. If I catch it going over 190, I'll put it into neutral. Neutral pumps fluid without generating heat...tc unlocked & disengaged. BTW, Park does not pump fluid. I have heard of VB mods to allow fluid flow in park, but have not pursued them yet.

Traffic moving >30mph, 160-180 depending on how long the traffic moves. If I can stay above 30mph for >0.5 mile, the trans will cool. At 30mph the TC loc

Stop light to stop light at 35-45mph speed limits, ~160-180 depending on how warmed ut the truck is, and distance between lights.

Freeway, in winter will heat to 140-160 after 20-30 miles. In summer, will cool down to 150-160.
