Transmission Band Adjustment

I am considering changing the transmission fluid myself and at the same time adjusting the transmission band tension. I have searched high and low but cannot find the backoff adjustments for the band tensioners for the 47RE.

Can anyone help?

Tighten to 72 in-lb, then back off 2 turns on the front band (says 1-7/8 in the manual but most agree 2 is perfect), and 3 turns on the rear band.

Some will argue that this is not needed and the only reason you would need to adjust is if the tranny is toast. I contend that the factory wouldn't document the procedure if it wasn't recommended, and it's definitely not going to hurt anything! Might as well do it any time you drop the pan.

Only if its TOAST.All the trans buliders and D.C.tech trans builders I put this to always smile and say its a leftover from the dinosaur era.The ONLY time they see a ban out of adjust is when its ruined or on Complete overhaul.

See Mike, I told you one of those people would speak up. Again back to my point... what will it hurt to adjust? NOTHING. What will happen to your tranny if for some reason it is out of adjustment, even if from the factory? It will wear out faster. Better safe than sorry. There's no down side and nothing to lose.

Do yourself a favor and get a B&M drainplug kit for the trans pan. It won't help this time but next time the pan comes off your arm won't turn red with trans fluid.. As far as the adjustment, you might as well check it while you are down there. One adjustment is right above the shift lever on the driver's side of the truck. There is a 3/4" locknot and a torx headed adjusting screw. The other is inside the pan beside the valve body. Keep in mind that once you have the correct adjustment the bands will still be a little loose. Do not overtighten or you will be pulling the pan off again!

Good luck...

My main worry is that if not done correctly or nut backs off etc.more harm then good comes from adjusting them. The PROS that I put this question to said all they do is feel for the amount of play and NEVER find any excessive and leave well enough alone.Just my 02 worth having been in the repair end daily for 25 years. In fact our MENU stated ban adjust with a service and WE had the wording removed. It just opened up another question and answer thing. No harm to check.I'd much rather see a trans FLUSHED unless the filter has 75k plus on it then anything such as ban adjust tinkered with.None of the LINE techs every checked theirs on their own autos/trucks or asked the trans techs to check them.99% of the failures we saw the ban still looked good and adjustment was fine.Torque convertors/internal lip seals and warped/burnt clutchs is what failed first.

Anyone who can't read 72in-lb on a torque wrench, and then count to 2, shouldn't be inside their tranny anyways.
