Trans Fluid and Filter...What kind?

Is NAPA ok to buy a trans filter?

Does it matter where I buy the trans fluid, is NAPA ok for that too? I don't need to buy it from the dealer do I?

Does it actually say on the truck or trans what trans you have?

Thanks
Scott

I buy the trans fluid by the gallon at the dealer for about $25.00. You might can buy it a little cheaper somewhere else (walmart maybe).

You can get a filter from the dealer too, or order it from Geno's Garage.

Don't be afraid to ask your dealer for a discount! I try to support them by buying some stuff from them every once in a while....even if I never take my truck there for work. (at least so far)

Amsoil ATF is second to none, and I would get an OEM filter.

All filters, including Mopar, are made by a few companies. If you are under warranty, I would use Mopar from Wal Mart.

When I changed mine I went to NAPA and got a Mopar filter, and went to Wally World and got some Valvoline ATF. I didn't do a full flush (which I maybe should have done). I just swapped filters and drained the pan, and cleaned all the crud off the magnet.

Right on Amsoil ATF is good stuff. I've had Amsoil ATF in mine for the last 2 years mixed in with factory ATF and have not had any problems.

I purchased the Mopar filter at the dealer, it was less than $30 if I remember correctly. I purchased gallons of Mopar ATF+4 at the dealership for about the same price as wal mart quarts.

I used Amsoil ATF and a $10 filter from Autozone that was visually identical to the factory filter.

I purchased the "Mopar" filters from Wal Mart too. They were right there with the Fram filters. They were cheaper than anywhere else that I have seen. You should see what the dealer wants for oil and filters for our Sprinter van. The oil can only be purchased through a dealer or oil distributor and it takes 13-1/2 qts. $12.00 a qt. from Dodge and $7.00 a qt. from Mercedes, go figure.

I just checked my dealer and $25 for the filter, not bad, but the best he would do on the ATF was $29.67 a gal. Thats way too much. NAPA said $3.79 a qt or $15.16 a gal. I'll check WalMart tomorrow. Do you think they would mess with me on any warranty work if I use something other than Mopar ATF? As long as its AFT-4 I should be good right?

Thanks

I believe the Mopar fluid is $4.97 at Wal Mart, been a while since I purchased it.

I went and found my receipt. I paid $19.58 plus tax at the dealership per gallon of Mopar ATF+4, and $13.31 plus tax for the trans filter. I have a hookup there, list price is $29.67 on the oil and $20.20 on the filter.

I've got 5 gallons of ATF+4 on hand for the install of my MH pan.

The spec is MS7176E. Make sure the container bears the Chrysler license number:

If it says ATF+4 it is probably good, just check.
