Went to the part store to get tranny and rear end fluid to change out in my truck but they have no way of looking it up. Can someone please tell me what I need? 2005 3500 6 spd

The diff uses GL-5 75W-90 synthetic or 75W-140 if towing heavy @ 4.5 qts. Just make sure it is synthetic. No additive is needed for the anti-slip diff.

The gasket is reusable. Do not over tighten the bolts. Just snug them up with a small wrench. Many have been broken by tightening to the specified torque.

The trans will use Penzoil Syncromesh, if the trans is a NV5600, @ 5qts. Some will say to overfill the trans by one qt. The amounts are from memory and might be wrong.

Remove the side plate on the trans to drain and clean the magnet in the bottom. The magnet will come out. You will need some silicone RTV gasket maker to reinstall the plate. Before you drain the trans remove the fill plug to make sure you can get it out. It takes a 17mm allen or make one from a short bolt and nut welded on and use a wrench on the bolt.

You probably already know this, but before you get trans fluid, you need to know which transmission you have. Because yours is an 05, it could have either the G56 or the NV5600 and they take different fluids. If reverse is to the right and up, you have the NV5600. If it's to the left and down, you have the G56.

Exclamation

If it is a G56 do yourself a favor take the PTO covers off while your changing fliuds and reseal them with some good RTV. The original sealant wasn't the greatest, mine always leaked! GW

+1 on all this. FWIW my NV5600 took barely over 4qts, though if I went through shifter I prob could have got more in.

Ok a tranny builder friend of mine said the 5600 need 5w30 synthetic motor oil, the syncromesh is only needed for the 4500 and he did recommend putting an extra quart through the shifter to keep 6th gear and the output shaft bearing happy.

Not sure I would put motor oil in an NV5600. The manual specifically calls for a certain oil and I don't think it's anything like motor oil. From what I hear, this tranny is very picky about its oil. The pennzoil synchromesh meets the factory spec and that's what I have in mine right now.

Amsoil also makes a synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W-30. Do not use 5w30 motor oil.
