Tranny problems

Tonight on my way home my NV5600 made a loud grinding noise. almost like a dry bearing sound. Then it popped out of 6th gear. It wouldn't go into any gear. I stopped on the side of freeway and it finally went into gear. It was fine all the way except when I let off the go pedal it pops out of 6th sometimes. no other gear but 6th. I only have 37000 on the truck. what could have happened. Also when it made the grinding noise it dragged the motor down as well almost to the point it died. Is thing going to grenade on me. Fluid levels are fine I know someone will ask.

Wink

You should have bought a 48RE. These will never pop out of gear or "drag the motor down till it quits"............. Just funnin ya. We get so much flack from the rowers with giant right arms that I couldn't help myself. I hope someone who knows what they are talking about jumps in and helps you out. You really don't hear of problems like the ones your having very often.

Haven't seen it on a dodge but yes I have seen this before( heard of it on the NV4500's). I beat the nut on the mainshaft or counter shaft has backed off. Check the fluid level first. Second, get it to the dealer quick before it backs all the way off and falls down into the gears. Another thing to look for is does the shifter jump back and forward in 6th when you let off and mash on the go pedal. Tell, Tell sign of a problem.

Oh yeah, sixth will probably be the last gear on the counter shaft and main shaft. Never seen a schlematic just an educated guess.

What year did they drop the7/100,000 powertrain warranty? I have a 04.5 and I'm pretty sure I have the 7/100,000

Ok had the truck at the dealer all day. I hate dealers. anyway. They finally get it in pull the plug and wow he tells me my tranny broken. Theres a revelation. I say no ****. It had metal everywhere in the oil that drained. He says im lucky it didn't grenade. long story short they order a tranny from detroit says it will be here next week. Now here it where I lose it. He fills it back up with lube and the service manager says go ahead and drive it just don't use 6th gear. I ask why and he says that the dodge rep wouldn't authorize a loaner car so if I wanted drive something drive my own truck or walk. I almost fed him his teeth. anyway I say whatever and drive home. But isn't this typical dodge service. I am strongly thinking switching brand of truck I'm tired of dodge service. don't get me wrong I love the cummins dodge but I am beginning to wonder if it is worth the hassle anymore. I never had this happen with ford but I must admit I was in the dealer more with my ford though, but at least they fixed it everytime and bent over backwards to help me. Dodge has never done this.

probably, but from what I've experienced you get better service. just my opinion. don't get me wrong, I went with dodge the last 2 times for a reason. I love their cars and trucks. I just wish their service was better is all i'm saying. I also know there are good and bad dealers but bottom line is STAR is the problem and tries to crap on the little man to save their bottom line. Will I go with ford or chevy- probably not. I love the cummins. Just my opinion.

Nothing surprises me from a dealer... if it wasn't for the lousy ones - how would we appreciate the good 'uns?

Well the dealer called tonight. Said they definately had a tranny on its way. So just out of curiosity I asked how he found a nv5600 that fast. He says he didn't he has a g56 on its way because that is what is in my truck. I laugh. then I say. Hmmm, I thought the getreg tranny's were aluminum cased not cast iron. He says they are. I say, well, my tranny is rusted and the last time i checked aluminum didn't rust. He says, OH, let me check your VIN again. He then calls back and says he is searching for an NV5600 for my truck and he is sorry for the mix up. I then says good luck and tell him to let me know if he finds one and if he can't I will be bringing the truck in for a new one. Like that will happen. but I had put my bluff in. He says he is sure he can find one. I tell him there are 5 on ebay right now. he laughs. anyway. I'm still waiting and probably will be waiting for along time. Hope it holds out. It still shifts just don't have 6th gear anymore. Besides that you wouldn't know nothing is wrong. I just can't believe the service manager couldn't tell the difference in a getreg and New Venture tranny. I thought they are CAR guys that when to car college (Ron White quote). Maybe he was sick on tranny day. I will update when i learn more. I might try the dealer 30 miles further up the road.

The G56 is NOT a Getrag (or Getreg)...
