Tracking down possible Injector noise
Tracking down possible Injector noise
Hey all,
I've read every single thread on injectors and injector noise.. My truck has right around 110k miles, and what I'm experiencing is a metallic sounding chatter when under towing load only.. It is very similar to the sound when the engine RPM's are coming down and the slight metallic vibration you hear.. except now it's very pronounced when under load (towing 11k in hills) under certain circumstances.
Some other facts: I'm not making any extra smoke, no hard starts, no white smoke at start-up, not making any oil, no lope at idle.
I adjusted my valve lash over the weekend, and while in there I tightened up the injector line brackets.. My preliminary throttle tests trying to re-create the sound seemed to indicate that it's still there.
I didn't re-torque the feed tubes or the injector bolts themselves.. so I can't say for sure if that is my problem.
bottom line question is: could this be injectors still? I'm trying to figure out if I should just go ahead and invest in a new set of injectors... but trying to avoid this huge expense if I don't need to.
anyone have this similar experience?

You can try capping injector one at a time at the rail and go out and drive until you find bad injector causing noise. Labor intensive and will take long time, you may want to pull all the injectors and have them all tested. This is what I would do since you may have more then one injector causing problem. Infrared temp readings at the exhaust will also show any injector that could be causing a problem. Don't let it go too long or you could melt down a piston.
