torque converter help!!!
yesterday my truck started acting up after driving normal for about 45 minutes. came to a stop and the truck didn't want to stop. wants to keep moving when you push the brake. I had to put it in neutral to stop and it's shifting funny from 1st to 2nd, then its fine once you get moving. I'm thinking it's the torque converter?? any ideas?
Same thing happened to mine.TC was bad at 52,000 mi. You will have to change Trans. pump and valve body also. If you upgrade the TC change the flex plate. I ended up changing the whole trans to an ATS with a 5 disk TC and tore the center of the factory flex plate out.
Not usually. The TC has no effect on these 2 if something internally goes wrong with it. Pumps being bad is another story and failure line. Needs checked while the trans is out but if it looks good no reason to change it.
Not true at all. I have over 80k on a stock flex plate with no issues. A lot depends on how the trans is setup, the TC built, and the right foot. If you tear up a flex plate and replace all you did wa smove the failure point back in the trans. The stock plate makes a good fuse to save parts.

According to other posts you should change the flex plate if you upgrade TC. I didnt change it and tore out the center of the flex plate . Trans is ATS Stage 1. Im not heavy with the right foot and truck is completely stock. The reason I was told to change Trans pump and VB was because the pan had a load of metal filings in it and it was recommended.
You have a ATS trans with a 5 disk TC. That in itself requires a better flex plate because of the way they set the transmission and TC up. However, using a single disk and setting the trans shifting and lockup for less than kill yields different results. You have to take the posts that claim a better flex plate is absolutely needed with a grain of salt. Some people can break an anvil in a sandbox.
The fact you tore the center out of the flex plate does raise the question of whether you are that easy on throttle and easy on the use. Aside from a missed problem with the flex plate, they do not fail that easily. Like I said, 80k on a stock flex plate with a tighter billet cover TC. My truck shifts and locks hard enough to bark the turbo at will and I am not what would be called easy on the throttle. Plus, I do a lot of towing in stop-n-go and slower speeds. Tearing the center like that suggest more than normal power or some pretty aggressive shiting and lockup under power.
Ah, so you had something more than JUST the TC going on there with all the metal in the pan. There is no use trying to slavage the trans under those conditions. Whoever reccommended a pump and VB along with the TC didn't do you any favors. If that metal came from the TC a lot of it went thru the cooler and the all the thrust washers and bushings. If it came from something else, a rebuild is in order. Just curious, did they also reccommend replacing the front cooler?
Not arguing the point here are times that a lot of parts need replacing, but, it is not an absolute. Catch the problem fast enough and a simple TC replacement is all that is neccessary. A thorough examination of the trans is in order to determine what its condition is.
