Might have been overfilled at the factory. Did you smell the oil to check for diesel fuel? If you do take it back to the dealer ASAP, bad injector(s).

if it is just over the mark, i wouldn't worry about it, you might not have been totally on level ground.

Booboo, one inch over the full mark is definitely not good. I am not sure how high the oil level in the oil pan must be before the crankshaft's throws churn the oil around resulting in detrimental oil foaming and rapid oxidation of the oil. A 1/8 inch too high level is acceptible. Check your engine oil when the vehicle has been parked on level ground and the oil has had time to cooled down. I check my engine oil once in awhile before starting the engine after it has sat idle for some time. When I park after a long run I drain the hot oil during an oil change, and I just loosened the oil filter one turn and let it hang on the nipple. By sitting over night the engine has extra time to let all the old oil out and the cooling process condenses the oil in the filter and when I unscrew it all the way next morning the cooled oil level is down far enough in the filter that I do not spill a drop of black oil while removing the oil filter. Sometimes I put a note on the steering wheel before I go to bed to help me remember not to start the engine because there is no oil in the crankcase.

Better to be safe than sorry, get your high oil level checked by the dealer to determine if there is anything causing the level to increase. It may have been overfilled at the factory. I first changed my 15W-30 factory petroleum oil at 2303 km/1431 miles on the odometer and replaced it with 10W-30 petroleum oil for the winter to continue the engine break-in period.

If you fill with oil until the level is at the full mark you will be putting in too much. It takes a long time for the oil to drain to the pan on these engines. When i fill after a change i stop about half way on the hash marks, after it sits overnight it will be very close to the full mark and i top up if necessary. I also leave it sit overnight before draining, it's amazing how much oil the block holds.

Mine was overfilled a 1/2 inch or more as well. No diesel smell. I drained some off. It's amazing how black this 06 oil is compared to my 03. Seems to be normal in 04 and up according to a lot of these posts. I hope so.

When I change mine, I put in a total of 3 gallons of Shell Rotella T which is including priming my new oil filter. That always puts it right at the top of the hash marks on the dip stick. Don't these blocks all hold the same amount of oil?
