Ive got an 03 common rail and ive noticed a ticking noise comming from my engine and was wondering if anyone esle has this problem. One of my buddies has an 04.5 and it does the same thing. Ive had my valves adjusted three times now and also rechecked rocker arms to make sure none of them had backed out.

 

Mine ticks. I was told it was probably carbon on the injector nozzles which could be cleared up with a suitable fuel additive or by driving it like I stole it. Too much rush hour idling is to blame for mine I think.

 

my '03 with 59000+ miles ticks. Most with over 40-50k at the truck stops that are idling seems to tick. Both my Dodge dealers say this is normal along with the Cummins dealer mechanics. My neighbor has over 280k on her '03 3500 flatbed [hotshoter] with the same tick.

Thnks for the feedback mines got 103k on it and you only notice it a idle and it isnt effecting power. Ive been told the same by dodge mechanics also but its hard to believe alot the say.

 

It's probably your larger injectors. My old 03 never ticked til I had injectors installed. It wasn't too loud though.
