third injection event changes

Is the third injector event changed in any way while the engine is running ? For instance, does it shut down at a certain rpm or engine load ? If an exhaust coating were used to get more heat to the cat, would the engine modify the third injector pulse to compensate ? My understanding is that the sole purpose for that last burp of fuel is to keep the exhaust hot enough for the cat to work properly.

I wonder if you take the CAT out, would it change that event or could you somehow change it so it doesn't happen at all?

Taking the cat off won't change the injection event, that would have to be done through programming.

Seems I remember it turns off when RPMs reach a certain point, like over 2,700. Don’t know for sure.

That third event is a huge factor in the new trucks meeting federal emissions (they won't meet it without it) and to tamper with it would definitely be a federal offense. Average joes like you and I could probably get away with it if we didn't try to build a business around it (not like we have the knowledge to actually do it). One of the companies that makes downloaders could probably easily get ride of it in their program, but that would be in-your-face federal emissions circumvention and would probably bring a lawsuit pretty quickly when the feds found out. That would be suicide for a business, hence I bet we never see it.

The best chance of seeing it is if someone overseas, like Marco, could work that into his Mad ECM for the 3rd Gens when he gets around to working on it.

I know it is reaching.... but if you could get the cat to work WITHOUT the third event and the wack at fuel economy that it brings, wouldn't that be a good thing ? So my question is, does the truck compensate for high exhaust temps and slow or stop that third event ?

From what I understand, the 3rd event happens periodically at lower load and lower RPM to get the Cat to burn off built up carbon, and if it didn't the cat would soon fail...

I don't think it would be like that. Companies make products to "turn off" OBD2 emissions systems on sports cars all the time. Exhaust companies that make "off road" exhaust systems wouldn't be able to sell them if that were the case. You would just have to label it an "off road" ECU flash or something... I would LOVE to see someone finally hack the ECU on these trucks, I want 4k RPM's without defueling and no 3rd injection event...

It would be interesting to see some details on the 3rd event and a way to turn it off for "off-road use".

This third event, really is, how would you say, counter productive...

With rising fuel costs, and less fuel, you would think there might have been a better way to meet the Feds standards... At least less cost to their customers...

This makes me want to change my oil much sooner as well...

We need some real answers, or better lies...

We need somebody to break the encryption on the factory ECU... Then ANYTHING can be done

Last truck we checked in 03 when the CR system came out only had two fueling events. Haven't heard any changes on that.

J BODY,

I could be wrong but I think the 3rd event came with the addition of the cat in 04.5 CR system. Someone in the know please let us know if this is the case or not?
