Is there a fix for "20mph whine" ???

I seem to recall hearing one person say the whine was fixed with a new center driveshaft bearing. But also remember loads of people saying they had the whine. Is there a true fix...or is everyone just "living with it". It is kind of embarrassing easing thru the neighborhood and having everyone looking and wondering what the heck.

I just started getting the whine last week. It only happens when in gear, once you take it our of gear its quiet, and it goes away at around 20 mph. Where does this whine come from and how do you fix it?

Tell them you have an aftermarket turbo?

I'd pop that diff open and make sure there's no lash, a performance shop could probably check that for you in a few minutes.

Mine's actually gone away now that it's starting to get warmer out, so I wonder if the winter weather had anything to do with it.

My truck would have the 20 mph whine, only under light acceleration, and only when the diff was cold. Once it warmed up, it went away. Thus far, I've just been "living with it" but it's been annoying having everyone who rides in the truck wondering what the hell that noise is.

I need to go to the dealer at some point anyway because of the weatherstripping issue. I may complain to them about the differential then.

I've started paying attention to the whine now, and it's gone, even from a cold start-up. This may be related to the fact that it's getting warmer outside, but it may also have to do with the fact that I've put almost 25,000 miles on the truck, so it is possible that it just took that much time to fully break the differential in. Thought I would share this info with you guys.

I just found out what my whine was. It was the rubber that is in the U joints. The whine or squeek is the foreshadowing of a U joint failure. Needless to say my truck is at DC getting a new U joint put in on the rear shaft (from U joint), thanks god for warrany. Are the stock U joints as bad as the ball joints? Is there a good aftermarket manufacturer?

OK - I've been seen this thread for a while now and I've tried to stay away.....

But I just can't resist it anymore!

I got rid of my 20mph whine by throwing my mother in law out of the truck

That noise....

My 20-25mph whine was the carrier bearing. Had it replaced, no more whine.
Of course, it will probably come back in another 16,000 miles....Can you say "Lemon Law"

My truck had the whine and take-off shudder. Had the shudder corrected with re-shimming the carrier bearing approx 1" (TSB for this). Added benefit was it also eliminated the whine.

Good Luck,
