Re:Synthetic oil
Well, lessee - I put about 12,000 miles a year on my trucks, and change oil at 5000 - 7000, depending on use and season...

It takes me about 15 minutes to drain that Delo 400 and change the filter and refill... Yeah, I think I can fit that 30 minutes per year into my busy retired schedule... ;D ;D ;D

Shucks. I even managed it without undue stress when I was still working - personally, *I* consider doing my own work on my truck relaxing and interesting - guess I'm sorta weird...
Re:Synthetic oil
Oh I don't mind doing my own work and very very rarely let anyone else do it but my point is why lay under there when you don't need to. The remote system works. I drive a few more miles too. I'm getting ready to turn 123000 in four years and three months.
BTW, I'm going to try and remember to chuck that old LP in the mail to you tomorrow. Got a note with your address laying on the desk right now.

Re:Synthetic oil
I dunno - I been a gearhead all my life - I sorta enjoy checking out things on the underside of my vehicles - I have a decent place to work on my stuff, and lots of tools - and our west coast climate lets us play with this stuff pretty much year-round... Spending time under my own stuff has not only saved me money on what I was directly involved in at the time, but also headed of other looming problems discovered in the process that would have probably been missed until they slapped me in the face out on some deserted section of remote road - I've come to consider that time flat on my back out under the truck as "quality time", about the only quality time left available at my age... ;D ;D ;D
Re:Synthetic oil
I have to agree with DD4X4. You spend much less time fixing things and driving these AWESOME machines by putting a little more money into it (Synthetic Oil). I have seen various engines that have been saved by the fact they ran synthetic fluids when the blew the oil filter off the unit or took a rock into the oil pan at 65 mph while pulling a trailer. When their mechanics took a look at the engines they could not believe how clean they were and the fact that they did no internal damage.
Oh, yeah and for those of you that live in cold climates you will really like the fact that these oils pour at such a cold temperature which does mean that the engine will get oil and turn over much easier when its cold.
I guess that's enouh soap box for now, I admit mine is AMSOIL from head to toe, runs cooler and even quieter now.
Remember guys keep it clean, this is only my opinion and does not reflect the opinion of the host site or it operators.
Re:Synthetic oil
Gary, whether or not I keep a truck for a long time I still prefer to use a good synthetic. At the time I was expecting to keep the '01 for a very long time, but then as you know these '03s came along and I just had to have one!

I did weigh costs over dino and even with 20,000 mile changes it cost maybe 15-20% more than running Delo 400. But those costs include oil analysis which gives you a great checkup on your engine's health and how well the oil is working.

I wanted a quality oil because if I DID keep a truck 300,000 miles, not only do I want it running at 300K, I want it to still have a healthy engine and be able to crank it out and smoke them tires and what have you.

I plan on the same for the '03, although I am considering a Base III oil like Rotella syn instead of the more expensive IV stuff, and then running 15K instead of 20. I don't want to mess around with the inconvenience & expense of procuring Delvac 1 or Amsoil this go-around (although I change my mind daily).

Vaughn

Re:Synthetic oil
Hey Guys, Here's my 0.02 Take it or leave it. I am presently running Rotella in my '03 CTD, I have learned from experience that this product takes care of an engine. I have a '85 BMW 524td (My work vehicle) that I've run with Rotella since I got it. It now has 330K miles without a rebuild and still runs strong. The synthetics are good but if you take good care of your vehicle, it will be fine.
Re:Synthetic oil
The discussion at this point is not whether the oils are as good as each other but the amount of time spent laying around under the vehicle. The dino oil will give the same protection if changed properly but it will take more of your time. It boils down to what you like best and what makes you feel the best.
Re:Synthetic oil
What about those who are concerned about warranty issues? Dodge doesn't make a distinction in their maintenance schedule between dino and synthetic oil, do they? I read change the oil at 7500 or 15k, depending your driving habits.

Parshal- Cummins recommends not going to synthetic until 20,000 miles. So I don't think it's a warranty issue.

This is not an argument whether synthetic drain intervals can or can't be extended over dino, it's just that Dodge makes no distinction in the owner's manual.

I would say that if DC was looking at replacing a damaged engine, the owner would have to produce evidence to show that the oil was changed at intervals per the DC manual. The use of synthetic oil, bypass filters, centifuge filters, oil analysis, and the like would be immaterial. The question would be "show us you followed the interval guidelines, and prove it".
