Surging & lots of codes
Surging & lots of codes
Saturday I was driving back home thru about two inches of new snow, when the truck starts bucking & surging. At idle it has a lot of rattle and yet no CEL. All the gauges check normal. At neutral throttle it surges, can fill it worse when the TC locks. Going up hills and giving it more throttle, it seems to act fine, good acceleration, can't see if there's any smoke cause it's dark.
About 10 miles from home I take it out of OD, doing about 50mph, seems to be better at higher rpm's. Still no CEL. Get a mile from home and it dies. These things are a ***** to turn, when the PS isn't working. I coast to a spot and finally the CEL comes on. After about 10 mins of trying, it starts and I limp home.
Pull the codes: P0237, P0192, P0483, P0236, P0700. The next day I unplug/replug several connections including the XZT & VA, drain the fuel filter & check for the wires that can rub on the back side of the AC comp. lines. Can't find anything wrong. I reset the CEL and it fires up with no problems. I let the truck idle for 5-10 mins, sounds OK again. Then take it for a spin, 4-5 miles. CEL stays out.
Back home I recheck for more codes, P0237 & P0192 are gone, but the others are still there. But the CEL is NOT on. I have had 190K miles without any problems like this, just a waterpump and front wheel bearing. These trucks are great. And stock LP still on. Any ideas?????

When my 04.5 had the engine mounted lift pump fail (80 k mi) it had a similar surge to what you described, additionally it died and after a few attempts to re-start the engine it finally fired and I was able to limp into a parking lot. I don't remember if it had a CEL. This could certainly be a lift pump failure. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?
If you have the stock engine-mounted lift pump you got fantastic service out of that unit, remember if you starve your CP3 for too long you may damage it. Check your fuel pressure.
