Stuff to look out for on a 3rd gen
Stuff to look out for on a 3rd gen
I looked at an 03 today with the HO engine and 48re. I was wondering if you guys could tell me any bad or good experiences with them. I have a 91.5 and love it, but I want something newer with a backseat and a little easier on my left (clutch) leg. It's got 60k and the dealer is asking 28,500, sound fair? According to Blue Book it's about 2100 lower. I don't plan on doing anything to it until the warranty runs out in 20k more miles. Between the payments and insurance (almost more then payments) I'll be right at if not barely beyond my limit. Is maintenance fairly easy on them.....oil change, fuel filter, etc.? Thanks for any input.

I have 58K on mine and would consider selling it for $28K. I think that price is way too high. Where I bought mine in OK, you can currently get a new 05 for $34,256 for a 3500 dually. Maybe the $25K is more reasonable but still somewhat high for a 2.5 year old truck with 60K miles. Plus, this dealer has always filled my tank and sent me to lunch/dinner on them. I know them buying lunch isn't a big deal ($60 last time) but how many other dealers do that???
Crap, I bought my 2004.5 Quad Cab 4x4 for $29,500 brand spanking new 1 1/2 years ago and 27K miles ago. Hell, I'll sell you my truck for that much, and go buy me a new one
so yes, you should remind the dealer that with DCX's rebates, that no only has all of the new car prices been lowered, but so have the used car prices. If you are gonna pay $28,500 you can get a brands new one for that price or slightly more.

I sold my 04 2500 SLT 4x4, HO Cummins, with extra's (look at sig) to a dealer in March for $29,500 with 28k miles on it....
BigBlue is right! With the current DC "employee pay" and discounts you can get a new one cheaper than the used one. Interest on new vehicles cheaper too...

I know, for the most part, Cummins owners keep thier trucks longer than gasser owners. How the employee price deal affected this, I don't know. However, if more than usual owners of 03-04's just bought new, the supply/demand #'s will be in favor of used CTD buyers.
Make sure you look around and see what else is out there besides this 2 yr old 60K vehicle. See what an 03 w/30K on it is going for. Autotrader.com is a good place to browse.
