start then dies

Ok so I have a 94 ram 3500 turbo diesel, about a week ago started having issues with starting. What happens when I start it, it runs for about 5 or 6 seconds then dies, after about 3 or 4 minutes of cranking and several start and stalls it starts and runs strong, I can start and stop with no issues, this only happens after it sits for several hours. Going to change the fuel filter, unless some one else has an idea of something else thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum. Filter is a good way to start, and that might fix it, but I suspect you may have a leak in the fuel line on the suction side of the pump that is allowing it to loose its prime.

ok now went to change the fuel filter(autozone) according to the book there should be a water in fuel sensor on the bottom of the filter, the new filter has a spot for it however the old one doesnt, the old one is a napa #3391 and just look like a plug, first should i just go buy the napa one, or is this an issue
