Squeak in Drive Shaft, U-Joint??

My father in law has a 05 CTD QC, SWB............been noticing a squeaking sound coming from drive shaft, universal joint area. Sounds just like a squeaky bed spring when he starts off. Apparently only squeaking when the drive shaft gets to a certain point, hence the "bed spring" sound. Local mechanic told him it was if he had been in deep mud from a river bottom, beach sand, etc. He has not had the truck in an area such as this, although he is second owner. Anyone had this problem...........?? Any suggestions/help in diagnosis appreciated.

Squeaky joints are usually totally dry of grease. If you really want to know for sure, run the truck on jack stands and watch the shaft. I had a joint that was tight when wiggling/moving by hand but was easily detected when run on jack stands. If they have never been replaced yet you might want to do it for preventative maintenance, the factory ones are junk.

I had the same problem with my '03. I took in into the dealership and they ended up replacing the whole two piece drive shaft. It ended up only costing $100 because it was covered under the 7/70 powertrain. I don’t drive the truck much and I had the shafts replaced in the fall of ’07 with only 38k miles on the vehicle.
