Spicer U-Joints for an '06?

The greasable precision U joints I put in about 40K miles are toast (I greased them every 5K or so).

I'm thinking about putting in the Spicer 5-1410X non-greasable but...

According to Dana-Spicer tech support, they will not fit. Looking at the dimensions, the cup is the same diameter (1.188") but the Lockup Yoke diameter is .010" bigger.

I know others have ground off .005" off each cup - I'd like to know how they did that (did you just take it to a grinding wheel?) and how they've held up.

If that was a major pain or they didn't hold up I may just end up going with the Neapco 3-0415.

Who's done it and how did it work for you?

Thanks,
Brad

They make Spicers that fit correctly. Don't remember the part number. Any good driveline shop should be able to hook you up. Precision u-joints are junk.

I ground mine on a surface grinder and a v block.
If it was possible I would measure the groove distance on the yoke and grind them to fit.
I ground .007 off mine and the clips were a pain to put in.
I only have a couple thousand miles on them so far, no problems.

I was told the 5-1410x is the new version (with improved seals) of the 5-801X. The 5-801X has the same dimensions, which is .010" too wide.

I talked to a guy at a drive line shop - he said that there are rumors about a new u joint specifically to fit the 03 and newer Dodge Rams, but I think I heard that a couple years ago too and have yet to find it.

With a holiday road trip coming up, I'll probably end up with what ever I can find locally knowing that I'll have to change them out again within the next couple of years
