Question soot...

I'm new to diesels so please give me a little slack here...

After 500 miles I found soot on all four wheels.

Is that normal for a diesel?

Thanks...

It's black and feels like soot.

It doesn't have any smell though.

But whats it taste like? Thats the only way that I know to really tell the difference.

Seriously, it's brake dust on the wheels; you'll find some soot on the right rear panel behind the tail pipe. You're doing something really wrong if there's diesel soot on the wheels.

Hoss, is this you?

Hey Bula,

It ain't Hoss.

Read my user name: diesel*NEWBIE*.

Yeah, I figured out it's just brake dust.

It's thickest closest to the inside of the wheel.

Also, I covered my have with it and it had a very slight metalic smell, rather than any kind of diesel smell.

Years ago our oil burner backfired and covered the inside of the house with soot.

Not only was the soot a disaster mess, but it smelled bigtime of oil fuel.

So I know this is just brake dust.

I'm live Mass and have lots of relatives up in NH and ME.

They're all diesel folks up there, especially in Maine, so compared to them I'm a newbie as well. I'm just trying to promote more family togetherness!

Thanks!

DT.
