Sometimes rough idle at startup
I'm new to the diesel world. Three months ago I bought a stock 2003 Ram 2500 4x4, auto tran, 5.9L with 190,000 miles. I have put 5,000 miles on it. I have changed out one injector at 193,000 miles. Since then on about 3 occasions after sitting over night my starting problem has occured. It starts quick goes to 750rpm, and then drops to 500rpm as if it is choking. Then it surges to 1000rpm, and drops back to a smooth 750rpm. Only one time did it die, and I had to start it up again. This problem has only occurred after sitting over night. Your suggestings will be appreciated. I am not a mechanic; I'm a 71 year old cowboy in Oklahoma.

I had this exact problem with my 2005 when I bought it used with 22,000 miles on the odometer. After two or three trips to the dealer and two injectors and a harness replacement the problem continued. I decided to try Diesel Kleen found at Wal-Mart. I immediately had no further problems with rough idle. Now I use the prescribed amount each fill up. The injectors must have been clogged up or something because Diesel Kleen resolved my problem immediately and this was nearly 4 years ago!!

Another possible problem is your FCA on your CP3 pump. It has been know to fluctate fuel pressures and cause same problems, but with 193,000 on the truck and stock injectors they are tired and need to be freshened up.

Thanks bdewey
For the past few weeks I've been reading through this forum when I have time, and I've wondered if the FCA could be part of my problem. When I can get into town, and find a diesel mechanic I'll have him check it out. They way that a diesel works, I could have more than one cause and effect. I enjoy reading this forum. It's very helpful for an old man like me.
