Slack on TV Cable, affecting shifts?
Slack on TV Cable, affecting shifts?
My truck has a what seems to be a light throttle surge going in/out of 1st. I wanted to check my throttle valve cable and from what I read, most people only have about 1/4" movement. Mine seems to have over an 1". I have tried adjusting the TV cable but doesnt seem to change anything. Did I read wrong on the 1/4" movement?
Edited to add: It seems to shift normal when I apply more fuel to it, or stop quickly.

Slack in the throttle valve cable will affect shifting. On the side of your transmission where the throttle valve cable attaches there is a spring that tries to keep the slack pulled out of the throttle valve cable. Make sure the spring is there.
Here is a neat trick: Unhook the end of the spring that is mounted solid to the transmission (not the T/V pivot arm end), now swing it 180 degrees and reattach to whatever you can, so that the spring is pulling the throttle valve pivot arm to an "open" or "slack" position (opposite direction of stock). Now take your truck for a short spin around the block. If shifting problem is better then adjusting the throttle valve cable will help. Don't forget to return spring to stock position. My truck is an 04 this worked for me.

Ditto, make sure the spring is there. I lost one on mine. have no idea what happened to it, but I noticed starnge shifts and banging/dragging downshifts coming to a stop sign. Went to adjust the cable and it was way loose. looke dunderneath and spring was gone. new spring and all was well.
RonP I did the valve body build up and the torque converter replacement with the Sonnax/Superior parts you listed many months back. Wow what a difference! Valve body parts cost $130.00. Torque converter cost $400.00. Purchased from Axiom of Tucson. Now tranny acts like machine, instead of a "BIG BABY" like the stocker. What a pleasure to drive a Cummins with a real transmission.
Thanks for the replies guys. The spring is there and doesnt seem to make a difference how much tension I put on the TV cable. I also tried just taking out the spring and that also didnt seem to make much difference. Any ideas what else it could be?
